Romelia Lopez

Romelia Lopez, 86, of Benton City, spent her last days surrounded by her family. She passed peacefully in her home to be with the Lord and the Virgin Mary on Sunday, October 30th, 2022. Romelia was born in Eagle Pass, Texas on March 5th, 1936 to Ruben and Mary Calixto.

Many were aided by her love and care through her advocacy for Aging and Long Term Care. Romelia also supported the community as an interpreter for the Court System for many years throughout the Tri-cities to Seattle areas.

In 1967 she moved to Granger, with the help of her angel, to provide a better life for her children. Her biggest accomplishment in life was raising her 6 kids by herself. She was a strong, independent, hard-working woman who overcame adversity to create a loving home for her children. Romelia instilled in them the ethics of hard work, faith in the Lord and the Virgin Mary and the strength of family.

Her unwavering faith in the Virgin Mary will always be remembered and passed down for generations.  Wherever she was, her rosary was always near.  Whoever entered her house left with a hot meal, a blessing and a kiss on the forehead.  Romelia’s faithful spirit and blessings will be carried on in our hearts forever.

Throughout her years Romelia enjoyed spending time with family, cooking, dancing at the Puerta Negra, spending time at the casino, and joking with her family and friends.

She leaves behind her children Carlos Lopez, Jessie Lopez, Frank Lopez, Anita Lopez and Linda Austin.  Romelia was preceded in death by her mom, dad and daughter Lydia Lopez.

We invite you to join us for her Rosary on Tuesday, November 8th at 3:00pm at St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Catholic Church.  There will be a potluck style reception to follow. To celebrate her life, we would like you to honor her by wearing a bit of red.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Heartlinks Hospital and Palliative Care.

  • I was informed that my Aunt Romelia had passed away… Even though I have not seen her in many years. I will never forget her acceptance of me! She always made me feel welcome and cared for!! She always fought to support her family as they did the same for her… I feel unfortunate that I never reached out to her sooner. But I know her faith in God and if she wasn’t able to be who she wanted to be…. God saved her!!! Such a blessing and someday we will meet again!! I’ll be praying for all her family for sure… I love you Aunt Romelia. Your niece Maria Calixto Sargent …..
