Glenn C. Lee Jr.

Glenn C. Lee Jr.

Glenn Clifford Lee, son of Glenn C. and Elaine Lee, passed away Monday, April 25, in Richland, WA, following a lengthy illness. He was 78 years old.

Glenn, known as GC to family and friends, was born in Kansas City, MO on April 28, 1938. His family moved to the Tri-Cities in 1946 where Glenn’s father, Glenn C. Lee Sr., was publisher of the Tri-City Herald from 1946 until 1980.  Glenn Jr. graduated from Kennewick High School in 1956. He was a debating champion at KHS and the editor of the “Lion’s Roar,” the school newspaper.

Glenn received his BA in Political Science at the University of California at Berkeley in 1960. He was a member of the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity during his undergraduate years. He followed his BA with a master’s degree in Business Administration at UC Berkeley.

Glenn studied Mass Transportation at the University of California at Davis. A life-long train buff, Glenn was active in the Railroad Club there. He inspired the Railroad Club to actively oppose passenger train discontinuances and to speak at railroad regulatory hearings. He published a detailed report calling for the restoration of the “Shasta Daylight,” a Southern Pacific Railroad passenger train that linked Portland, OR and the San Francisco Bay Area. His report was favorably reviewed in the San Francisco Chronicle and is part of the permanent collection of the UC Davis Library. Glenn was also instrumental in establishing a student-run bus service in Davis, Unitrans, which featured ex-London Transport double-decker buses. These buses remain a popular feature of the Davis community.

Glenn worked for many years in Seattle as a manager for the King County Metro, and in Alberta, Canada as a marketer for the Edmonton Transit System and in Ottawa for the Ontario transit system. He returned to the Tri Cities in 1979 and worked for the Tri City Herald until he retired in 1985.

GC enjoyed travelling around the US and Canada, riding on some of the unique railroad lines still available for passengers. He loved Baroque music and especially enjoyed recordings by Bach, Vivaldi, Bonporti, and Albinoni. He was an active member of the Charismatic Catholic movement, and his prayers were a blessing for many.

GC is survived by sisters Vicki Campbell of Seattle and Penny McKean (James) of Iowa City, IA, nephews Tim Moon (Anita) of Austin TX, John Moon of San Antonio, TX, Joseph Wilson of Union, WA, nieces Lee Anne Campbell of Oakland, CA, Catherine Gaul (Aaron) of Seattle, WA, Meryl McKean Davies (Thomas) of Seattle, WA, and by many grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Elaine Lee, sister Terry Moon, nephew Glenn Wilson, and brother-in-law Robert Campbell. GC will be greatly missed.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, May 3 at 11:00 am at Christ the King Catholic Church in Richland, WA.
