Robert S. Gowen, 69, of Kennewick, WA, went to meet his Heavenly Father on July 29, 2009. Robert was born on August 19, 1939 in Corsica, South Dakota.

Robert attended elementary school in South Dakota, where he also did cow herding for a local farmer. He then attended his high school years in Caldwell Idaho at Gem State Academy. He was a first string forward basketball player for Gem State Academy.

Robert joined the Army out of high school and served 10 years. While in the service he was recognized for his marksmanship shooting. During his years in the service he was stationed in Wuerzburg, Germany where he met his wife, Erika, and started their family. Their son, Steve, was born in Wuerzburg, Germany and shortly thereafter moved to the United States. Their daughter, Christina, was born in San Francisco, CA. The family spent many years traveling the United States and ultimately settled in Kennewick, WA., where he was employed by Boeing Computer Services as a project manager.

Robert enjoyed time with his children by managing his son's little league team, The Pirates, watching his daughter compete in beauty pageants and baton twirling. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, and customizing cars.

Robert is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Erika Gowen; son, Steve Lorna; daughter, Christina; brothers, Jerry Kitty and Walter; sister, LaVonna John; granddaughters, Tanya, Stephanie and Sarah; grandson, Andrew; great granddaughter, Destiny; and many extended family members.

He is preceded in death by both parents, Evelyn and Walter Gowen.

  • For the Family of Robert S. Gowen From the Kennewick Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution There are no words to express the sorrow of losing a loved one. It is a pain that only time will heal. While we did not know Robert personally, as DAR members, we honor his commitment to our country and his service in its defense. The DAR strongly supports our nations's military, and we recognize the personal sacrifice that each member gives, as well as their families. To that end, we offer you our heartfelt condolences, and prayers of comfort. We thank you for Robert's service, and his sacrifice to our country. • We met Bob when we arrived here in Richland in 1977 when we were all working for Sperry Univac. Bob was the project manager at the site. After several years, we ended up working for Boeing Computer Services, Richland. I have only seen Bob a few time since we retired in the mid 90’s. Bob was a good boss and good friend. Our condolences to Erika, Steve & family and Christina & Family.
