Carolyn Elaine Frantz Slippern

Carolyn Elaine Frantz Slippern, 76, entered into her eternal life at Kadlec Medical Center on April 10, 2016, surrounded by her family.

Carolyn was born in Big Run, Pennsylvania on October 8, 1939, to Charles and Bess (Laird) Frantz.  At the age of three, her family traveled to Richland, Washington so that Charles could work for the Manhattan Project.  Carolyn remained a Richland resident for the rest of her life.

Carolyn graduated from Columbia High School, Washington State University, and the University of Washington.  She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies and a Master of Librarianship.

Carolyn taught at Park Junior High School in Kennewick, earning her masters during evenings and summers.  During this time, she met her future husband, William (Stan) Slippern, at a folk dance at the Richland Community Center.  After courting for 3 months, Stan proposed.  They were married November 12, 1966 at West Side Church.

Carolyn was a homemaker while her children were young.  Later, she worked as the children’s librarian at the Richland Public Library.  Many may fondly remember Storybook time.  Carolyn also taught pre-school at West Side.

Carolyn was an avid quilter, reader, and bird watcher.  She served as president of the Tri-Cities Quilters Guild and made over 125 quilts; many were given as gifts to charities, family and friends.  When asked why she enjoyed quilting so much, she answered “There are no rules in quilting; you can do anything you want. There is no Quilt Police.”

Family was forefront for Carolyn - vacations, holiday get-togethers, and church activities.  As empty nesters, she and Stan explored the world together via Elderhostel, mission trips, and vacations with their children and grandchildren.

Most of all, Carolyn loved God, becoming a Christian as a young adult.  She was an active member of West Side, serving the Lord in roles including Deacon, Missions Committee member, nursery and Sunday school teacher.  Carolyn cherished her church small group and hosted it weekly until her death.

Carolyn is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Stan; son, Eric Slippern and his wife, Sally; daughter, Jennifer Nuzum; and grandchildren Derek, Isaac, and Keira.  Carolyn leaves behind numerous dear friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to West Side Church.  At Carolyn’s request, there will be no memorial service.  The family encourages all to rejoice in celebrating that Carolyn is with her Heavenly Father.
