Wayne Fred Wallace 1929 - 2017

Wayne was born to Esther Metz Wallace and Leonard A. Wallace on December 31, 1929 in Garden City, Kansas. The family moved to Boulder, Colorado when Wayne was 6 years old, and in poor health from dust storms. After extensive ear surgeries, Wayne started school at Sacred Heart, where he was proud to become an Altar Boy.

Leonard was recruited from Remington Arms to work at Hanford in 1943. When he got a “B” house on Comstock Street, his family joined him in June of 1944. Wayne attended Lewis and Clark, and graduated from ColHi in 1950. He then served in the Navy from 1950-1954. He served on the USS Grasp, ARS (a rescue salvage ship) in Korea and the Philippines. Wayne also served on the USS Laertes (AR-20).  Wayne was discharged as a GM2 from Tacoma Group, Pacific Rescue Fleet and Tacoma Slash.

Wayne married Elva McGhan, a class mate, while on shore leave, February 13th, 1952, in Kennewick, WA. He worked at Welches as a mechanic from 1954-1955. He then became a postman in Richland in from 1956 – 1958. After working in the post office he started with GE as a metal handler in the 300 area. He there worked for various companies at Hanford before taking an early retirement from Westing house as a Senior Chem Tech in 1989.


Wayne enjoyed traveling in the Motorhome throughout the Northwest with family and friends. Took many camping trips with friends and family, including our Boston Terriers. He liked working on genealogy and meeting new people. Wayne was always available to give a helping hand to others.


He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Virgil Wallace, Bea Shootman, Arnold Wallace and Norman Wallace. He is survived by his wife Elva of 65 years, sons, Bradley and Scott Wallace, nieces D’Ova (Bob) Siemens, Patty (Carl) Youngdahl, Suzanne (Gustavo) Palma, Charolette (Bill) Mallonee, Majare (Jerry) Jensen. nephews, Ronald (Carol) Bradford, Kenneth Shootman, Melvin (Sandy) Shootman, Albert McBee. Brother-in-Law Vern (Dorothy) McGhan, Mark McGhan, Shellee (Mark) Marlo, Fritzi (Mark) Reese, and Teri (Larry) Kessie.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In Lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Wayne’s name to the Tri-Cities Gospel Mission or your local Humane Society.
