Jacquelin Dedmon

Jacquelin (Jackie) Mary Jackson LaMastus Dedmon passed away the morning of Friday, July 14th, 2017 at The Life Care Center in Richland, Washington. Jackie was born September 24, 1932 to Dorothy and Maurice Jackson in St. Maries, Idaho and lived there until moving to Spokane with her mother following her parents’ divorce. When she was 12 years old her mother married Charlie Hemphill and the family moved to Rosalia, Washington, where Jackie graduated high school in 1950. It was while attending Kinman Business School in Spokane that she met James LaMastus of Smith Valley, Indiana who was stationed at Fairchild AFB. They married in December of 1955 and following the birth of their son Michael in 1956, Jackie and Jim moved to Smith Valley where Jim co-owned a flooring business with his brother. Sandra and Darrell were born in Indiana in 1957 and 1960.

In 1961, Jim died in a motorcycle accident, leaving Jackie with 3 small children to raise. In 1963 the family moved next door to Jackie’s parents, Dorothy and Charlie Hemphill in Albion, Washington. With their assistance, Jackie created a wonderful home for her children and the LaMastus home became a go-to spot for many Albion kids with fond memories of playing kick-the-can late into the night.

In 1967 Jackie returned to work full-time as a school secretary and later moved into the District Business Office. Jackie retired as the District’s Accounting Supervisor in 1993 following over 25 years of service to the Pullman School District.

In 1983 Jackie married Gaylen Dedmon, pastor of the Albion Community Church where she attended. They enjoyed 20 years together and took every opportunity to spoil their many grandchildren. Following Gaylen’s death in 2003, Jackie sold her home of 40 years and moved to Benton City, Washington to be near her son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Dorothy LaMastus. She lived with them for 12 years until declining health required round-the-clock care. In addition to being a member of the Richland Baptist Church, she also enjoyed spending her free time volunteering for the Richland Washington Seniors Association organizing events and managing the gift shop.

Jackie is survived by her half brothers, Paul and Ron Jackson; her children Michael (Lynn) LaMastus of Asotin, WA, Sandra (Jim) Price of Lakeside, CA, Darrell (Dorothy) LaMastus of Richland WA, and a daughter-in-law Elizabeth LaMastus of Post Falls, ID; 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Richland on September 2nd at 11:00am at Einan’s Event Center.

Donations can be made in her name to the Richland Washington Seniors Association.
