Philip Lee Carpenter

Philip Lee Carpenter passed away on Friday September 8, 2017.  He is survived by his beautiful wife Terri Ann Carpenter.

Philip was born in 1953 to Fred and Leta Carpenter and was raised in Benton City, Washington.   He graduated from Ki Be in 1971 then joined the Marine Corp.  When he returned from boot camp Phil married his high school sweetheart Terri Phelps.  They had 3 children:  Andrea Hexum, Zac Carpenter (Mandy) and Lindsey Shelton (Josh); 12 grandchildren; 2 great- grandchildren; brother’s Fred Carpenter (Virginia), Rex Carpenter (Louise); sisters Rose DeField and Evelyn Small along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Phil was an amazing story teller and could make anyone laugh.   He enjoyed camping, hunting, spending time with his family, and working on his cabin.  He retired from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office in 1996.  In 2002 he started his own excavation company “Centurion Excavating” where he loved playing in the dirt.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, September 14, 2017 at 1:00pm at Hillspring Church in Richland.

  • Emotions are still too raw to adequately express our condolences to Terri, Andrea, Lindsey and Josh, Zac and Mandy and the quiver full of amazing grands & greatgrands.
Phil had that magical way of allowing all to become his ‘best friend’! He was an amazing conductor by taking all listeners on a rollercoaster ride with his story telling! He had us laughing while loosing our breath and then would whip us around another corner and have us crying real tears…when appropriate. We love you Phil Carpenter and will miss you so much.
He has such an enormous love for Terri and each of his children and their families. Most importantly, he loved the Lord and believes in eternal life for those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their personal savior. We look forward to the day we are all called home and can reunite with Phil and others who have gone ahead.
God bless you, Carpenters and family! We love each of you, dearly.

  • Phil Carpenter was a giant of a man with giant heart and a sense of humor that those of us who knew him would wonder what was the matter with him. He was soft spoken but his presence demanded your attention and respect.
We worked the road together in the early 80’s and were in the Tri City Metro a Drug Task Force together in ’88 & ’89 along with Larry Taylor, Henry Montelongo, Brent Phufendler and a number of others. It was a great experience. We put a lot of dopers in jail with our investigations while Phil kept the investigations light with his comments and humor! Red flannel shirt, bibs and boots – uniform of the day!!
I was honored to have him attend my retirement BBQ in late May. I got the hug from a brother who I truly respected. We will all miss you Phil! We got your back!!

  • I will always remember what a kind and pleasant person Philip was. I want to share a fond memory I have of Philip. When my daughter was a toddler, she was pretty standoffish to men other than her dad and grandpas, with one exception: Philip Carpenter. She adored Philip. He could get her to carry on long conversations with him, even though she was normally so shy with most other people. It was very sweet, and the memory always brings a smile to my face. I know Philip was so, so loved by all of his family, and I know he will be remembered and missed every day.

  • Terri,
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Phil’s passing. I know this is a tender time for you and your family and I am keeping you in my prayers. It is so hard to say good by to our loved ones so I hope it brings comfort to know that others are sharing your burdens. May your sweet memories bring you comfort as well. I am so sorry.

  • Recently in a conversation with a young Marine I thanked him for his service and mentioned that I was also a veteran. The young Marine’s response was “Thank you sir for your service, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us”.
If that is true then there are a large number of Marines and law enforcement officers standing on the broad shoulders of Phil Carpenter. No one represented the best of the law enforcement profession better than Phil. I knew Phil to be a truly honorable man always valuing his advice as well as admiring his ability to bring calm to any situation. Phil’s passing is a huge loss to the community and our country. Phil truly was a quiet hero.
Thank you Phil for the life you shared with the rest of us.

  • My sincere condolences to Phil’s family. I met Phil at Ki-Be. He was 4 years older than me and he seemed a bit bigger than life to a 7th grader. I respect and appreciate Phil’s service to our country in the Marines and our community. His passing is sad and my heart goes out to your family.
    Sincerely,
