Samuel “Richard” Whithurst, 67, of Pasco passed away suddenly
September 9th, 2017 at Kadlec Regional Medical Center surrounded by those he
loved most. Richard was born in Vivian, Louisiana June 10th, 1950, the fourth of
nine children.
He endured a lot in his life, including a diagnosis of polio, resulting in many treatments and surgeries. He was not defined by his limitations, but his drive and perseverance to overcome any obstacle put in his way. You knew what he was thinking by the expression on his face. He was firm but loving and there was always a lesson to be learned from him. He was rough around the edges but balanced it with his great sense of humor.
He spent much of his youth following harvest and working the
fields. He was a hard worker always going above and beyond until the very end.
He held many jobs over his life, but the one he loved most was driving truck
with his traveling companion “Buddy Boy.” He saw the US many times over
including Alaska and most of Canada. He hauled seed potatoes, onions and
carrots and anything else he could carry. Most recently he was a RV transporter
for Bee Line Transport out of La Grande, Oregon hauling campers and trailers.
He worked all the way to the end, making his final run home September 1st 2017.
Richard was greatly respected and liked by those who knew him. He had friends from coast to coast. This asphalt cowboy will now forever be “Out of Service” and greatly missed.
He met his wife Kathy Smith July 1st, 1972 where she was a waitress. Richard was a persistent man, going so far as to rent a room in the same building as the diner, so he could see her more. They were married November 4th that same year.
He is survived by his wife Kathy; son, Richard “Rich” and Linda Whithurst of Dayton, WA; daughter, Heather and Michael Ochs of Richland, WA; and grandsons, Declan, Keldan and Laklen Ochs; Sisters, Jean, Barbara, Katherine, Mary, Betty, Candy and Tracy; Brother, Michael and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his father Samuel in 1987 and his mother Etta Mae in 1998.
A Celebration of life will be held at Events at Sunset on September 14th 2017 at 2:00 PM with viewing from 11:00AM-2:00PM. 915 Bypass Highway Richland, WA 99352. Casual dress, blue jeans acceptable, dessert reception, and no graveside services.
I’m the youngest sibling if Richard Whithurst, he will be forever in my heart. I didn’t know my brother as well as I would have liked, because of our ages. But I can say that when I was small, I thought Richard hung the moon just for me. I will love him and think of my big brother forever more.
“Free by birth, trucker by choice” that was the Richard I knew. Richard was a kind man with a smile that spoke a thousand words. More than once I saw a twinkle in his eyes and mischief was soon to follow.
It is now time to rest.
Till we meet again.
So very sorry for your loss. You and your entire family will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Thanks for the fun times and memories driving around the Northwest in the big rigs and anything else that had wheels. We will see you again someday.
Rest in peace Richard. You were much to young
I Had great talks with Richard while we would be loading our trailers at Palomino, about Life, Family and Friends and just stories of things we’ve done. Him going one place me going another as we criss-cross the USA. Maybe its because we were both the same age but we both had a great connection.
I will truly miss not seeing him on the Highway.
I’m so sorry for your loss.
Though I never met Richard, I felt like I knew him. He was so loved, respected, and talked about by Kathy’s family!! He worked so hard to make things better for his wife and kids, even when it was physically difficult for him personally. He will be remembered always…
God bless his family and all his friends he will be greatly missed by all that knew him
