Leo E. Chulos was born in San Fernando, California on December 26, 1925. He passed away on January 15, 2007 at Callaway Gardens in Kennewick, Washington.
Leo grew up on an orange orchard in California, graduated from high school in San Fernando, and immediately joined the Navy. He served on Navy submarines for 20 years during WWII Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, Philippine Liberation. He had numerous commendations during his years of service, but his proudest accomplishment was being a chief Quartermaster of the USS Sargo, the first submarine to break through the ice at the North Pole during the winter of 1960.
After retiring from the Navy, Leo worked at Battelle National Laboratories and after 24 years of service, retired from Westinghouse Hanford Company.
Leo is survived by his wife, Celia, his soul mate of 60 years, their son, Jim Rhonda and grandson, Travis, and daughter, Linda Tom and grandchildren Tyler, Gavin, Rochelle, and Nathan.
Leo is preceded in death by his parents, James Edward Chulos and Ella Maude Hinkle.
Dad, you were a wonderful loving husband, father, and grandfather. You will be forever missed and always in our hearts. I love you, Dad.
Graveside Service with Armed Services Honors will be on Saturday, January 20, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Richland Cemetery.
Leo was a very good man whom I had the honor to know.
Celia, we offer you our deepest sympathy at this time of your loss of Leo. We always enjoyed the chats we had with you over the fence when you lived in the “A” house on Benham. We missed you when you moved as you were wonderful neighbors! We remember Leo out in the lawn chair reading. Please know that you are in out thoughts during this time of sorrow for you.

It has been a long time since I’ve seen Lee but I have very fond memories of him. Asparagus hunting, listening to him tell the story of his submarine which I found very interesting even at such a young age. I will also always remember the story of how he met the love of his life, Ce! He was always a very kind person to me and my brothers and sisters. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.
I had the pleasure to serve with Leo when he was Chief of the Boat COB on USS Sargo SSN 583. That was my first submarine. We were a very tight crew.
Chief Chulos impressed me then and I was even more impressed by his accomplishments after he retired from the Navy. I visited him a couple of times when I returned to Richland.
I extend my sincere sympathy to all his family and friends. I’m sure he is going to be deeply missed.

To everyone that attended my fathers services and sent their well wishes, my family and I thank you so kindly for your thoughts and prayers. My dad was extordinary and will be missed every day of our lives.
Celia, and Famley.
I worked with Leo and Westinghouse Hanford and I realy enjoyed the talks we had about the old submarine days of WW 11. I never got the chance to sail on a sub but I was part of SUBLANT from 1969-1973. Leo I miss those talks but we will talk again. Your just a few rows to the north of where our son is buried and only a few west of my folks. So we will talk even if it a little one sided for now.
To Celia, Jim and Linda, remember all those great and wonderful times and may God be with you all

Linda and family,
You all are in my prayers. Leo was a great man. I loved to hear his stories about the navy.
