Valentine Bartholomew Schwinberg

Val was born May 1st, 1918 in Wheeling, WV. He was raised there until he served in the 8th Air Force in WWII in the European theatre, stationed primarily in the UK, France, Ukraine, and the Middle East. Following the war he returned and married the love of his life, Elizabeth Spindler of Denver, CO, who he met prior to his overseas duty. He graduated from Colorado University in Boulder and moved to the Tri-Cities in 1951 with his family. He worked for all the major contractors of Hanford including General Electric, Douglas United Nuclear, Battelle Northwest and Westinghouse Hanford where he worked in various managerial positions. After retiring he was deeply involved in community service doing small business advising and consulting for over 15 years for the Small Business Administration SCORE. In addition he served on the board of Senior Life Resources Northwest, an agency that aids senior citizens.

Among his many interests and passions were his family, traveling, exploring, constant learning, airplanes, trains, ships and music. He was also known for his offbeat and highly creative sense of humor.

Val and Elizabeth recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on March 5th, 2006 with family and friends.

Val, a.k.a “Bear”, passed away on Wednesday the 23rd. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, brother Jim, children Jean, Paul, Monica, John and daughter-in law Sapna.

Friends and colleagues are welcome to pay respects at Einan’s Funeral Home Saturday and Sunday August 26th and 27th from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days. Funeral mass will be at Christ the King church in Richland at 1:00 p.m. on Monday August 28th with cemetery services at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Reception will follow at Christ the King immediately after graveside. The family would appreciate any donations in memory of the Bear to the United Way of Benton-Franklin County.
