Fred was born on Jan. 3, 1930 in Bloomfield, NJ, the youngest of four boys. His parents were Frederic A. Silva Sr. and Johanna Lehning Silva. He graduated from high school in South Glens Falls, NY in 1948. He held various jobs after high school until he was drafted into the army and served in Korea. After his time in the army he attended the University of Denver where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. He moved to Richland, WA, and began working at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. While in Richland he met and married Ethel Kidd. He worked in various phases of the nuclear industry in many different locations, and eventually earned his Master's Degree in Nuclear Engineering. Fred retired from Westinghouse and moved back to the Glens Falls area. Later he moved to Florida and then on to Oregon, where he died on March 19, 2013.

He is survived by his brother David, his daughters Jeanette and Valerie, his son Greg, daughter-in-law Laura, and granddaughters Jennifer and Michelle and many cousins, nephews, and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or to Lutheran Hour Ministries. A memorial service will be planned for a later date.
