Bert Houweling

Bert J. Houweling, age 71, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2022 in Kennewick, WA. Bert was born on June 15, 1950 in Den Haag, Netherlands to Albert and Maria Houweling. Bert’s family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah when he was six years old. He always had fond memories of his childhood there.

When Bert was twelve years old, his family move to Bellevue, WA. He was hired by a neighbor to clean stalls and exercise their horses and it was then that he discovered a love for horses.

Bert served in the United States Army as Military Police and was honorably discharged in Sept. of 1976. Bert later became a member of both The Odd Fellows and The Elks Lodge.  As a young man, Bert worked at Fred Meyers and became their youngest store manager. From there, he went to Associated Grocers in Seattle, and eventually owned Heppner Family Foods in Heppner, Oregon. Bert enjoyed his employees, and the people he interacted with daily at his store in Heppner. But above all, he loved his children: Charlene, Jason and Candice.

Bert was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Houweling and Maria (Van Der Meer) Houweling.

Bert is survived by his children: Charlene M. Houweling, Jason E. Houweling, and Candice Felstad, and his siblings: Hubertina Seal, Mary Skidmore, Albert C. Houweling, Jeannette Ruijgrok, Jessie Hargrove, and Shirley VanSchie.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bert’s honor to Chaplaincy Health Care, 1480 Fowler Street, Richland, WA 99352.

  • Hey Bert, I have known you since you were 19 years old. You had many ups and downs in your life, as have I. I was there thru 2 marriages for you. I totally understood one, but not the other divorce. I still never lost contact with you and always felt like you were my 3rd brother. I know you always cared about me after I divorced your brother and I always really appreciated you .
I have loved the man you were and still do.
    I will always miss you!
My “special thanks” to Kim Gartner for always taking such good care of you when you really needed help.!
I am so gratefull and happy that you had Kim and Jason there for you in the end.
Untill we meet some day, rest in peace!!!
    Love you,
    Suzanne
