Silas “Gene” Jensen
Silas Eugene “Gene” Jensen was born at home in Edgerton Wyoming on September 24, 1939. He departed this world on May 10, 2022 after surgical complications, he was 82 years old.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Walter Jensen and Edna (Tribble) Jensen, his sisters Evelyn Reyes, Nadine Garriot and a daughter Barbara Kay Jensen. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Geraldine “Gerry” Rogers Jensen, his siblings, Nancy Mills and Terry Jensen, his children Catherine (Gary) Louie, Connie (James) Drake, Steven (Angela) Jensen, and Mary (Douglas Herigstad) Jensen. He cherished his grandchildren Christina “Cricket” Louie, Levi Drake, Drake Johnson, Savannah Johnson, Holden Herigstad, Chance Jensen, and Abigail Herigstad.
His grandmother taught him to fish in the Big Horns at a young age and it became a lifelong passion. Gene met Gerry when they were juniors in high school in Casper, Wyoming. They were married in the spring of 1959 and they built a life together, remaining committed through many highs and lows up until his death.
With Gerry’s support, Gene earned his BS in Chemical Engineering from Montana State University in 1961, and went on to get a masters in Chemical Engineering in 1968 from the University of Idaho. Gene was a member of the fraternal order Tau Beta Pi and a certified Professional Engineer. His career spanned nuclear reactor design, testing, safety and regulation. He believed that he could serve his country and family by developing nuclear power.
After retiring, Gene and Gerry enjoyed trips to Alaska with their friends from their local TOPS chapter. Gene Jensen was a longtime member of Shalom United Church of Christ. He enjoyed his church family and faithfully brewed coffee every Sunday as well as performing various other roles. Many fond memories were made at camp N-Sid-Sen with his congregation and family.
Gene was a mighty outdoorsman, fisherman, Ninja Nuclear Safety Chemical Engineer, supportive father, loving Opa and avid Harry Potter fan whose memory is cherished by those who knew him. He was a big guy with an even bigger heart.
A service will be held to honor him and celebrate his life at Einan’s at Sunset Chapel June 04, 2022, at 11 am with a reception to follow. A viewing will be held on June 3, 2022 from 1 to 5 pm.
