Kenneth J. Young
February 27, 1960 – February 16, 2023

Kennewick, Washington – Kenneth J. Young was born on February 27, 1960 in Pocatello, ID. He passed away peacefully at his home in Kennewick on February 16, 2023 after battling heart disease.

Ken graduated from Idaho State University in 1983 and moved to the Tri-Cities to begin work as an Environmental Scientist at the Hanford site. In 1989, he met his life partner, Cathy, and they built their life together with their Alaskan Malamutes. Over the years, Ken enjoyed creating recipes, cooking and entertaining. One of his famous dishes was “Thai Soup” that became a highly requested meal at family gatherings and social functions.

He leaves behind an incredible legacy of being everyone’s fun uncle, big brother or best friend. He was the kind of person that could make new friends everywhere he went! Ken had a zest for life that was showcased by his love of adventure. Driving his big RV to go camping or wine tasting with friends was always a great time with Kenny behind the wheel! Between his trips around the globe (to places like Thailand, Guatemala and Belize) he could be found snowmobiling, four wheeling and kayaking in Island Park, ID; and boating on the Columbia River. Ken fostered that same sense of adventure for all the children in his family as well!

Over the last few years, Ken split his time between his home in the Tri-Cities and his home in Hawaii. He always lived life to the fullest, and that is what his loved ones will remember him for.

He is survived by his life partner, Cathy Pokos, his mother Patricia Slocum, sister Kelly (Kenny) Gabel, niece Lindsay (Travis) Helm, great-nephew Beckham Helm, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.

He is preceded in death by his father Larry Young, grandmother Almeda Young, grandmother Marjorie Hayman and cousin Robert “Bobby” Jenks.

Ken’s Celebration of Life will be an open house at Taverna Tagaris (844 Tulip Lane Richland, WA) on Saturday, March 18th from 2pm-4pm.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to Providence Inland Northwest Foundation – Cardiac Care or Benton Franklin Humane Society in Ken’s name.
