Floyd M. Shoemaker Jr.
Floyd Monroe Shoemaker Jr. was born in Gadsden Alabama on August 26th, 1931, to Floyd and Martha Shoemaker, and went home to glory Saturday April 15th, 2023, at age 91, in Richland, Washington.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and his wife of 64 years, Elsie Loujean “Jean” Shoemaker. He is survived by his two children, Floyd Monroe Shoemaker III and Cheryl Ann Kibbe, and his younger brother, along with a niece and numerous nephews.
He was born and grew up in Gadsden, Alabama, graduating from Auburn University as a Mechanical Engineer and Reserve Army Officer. He married his long-time neighbor and childhood sweetheart Elsie Loujean “Jean” Gilbert on May 8th, 1954. Their early years saw them living in Germany, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and California, before settling in Richland in 1971, where two more children joined the family through marriage – Patricia Shoemaker (Barrington) and D. Robert “Bob” Kibbe. He retired in 1988 after a long career with Westinghouse Hanford. He was an active outdoorsman, enjoying golf, fishing, hiking, hunting, and painting.
Floyd and Jean were members of and deeply involved in Richland Baptist Church for more than half a century. Floyd was a long-serving Deacon in the church and was especially active in visiting church families in hospitals and other venues, as well as being an active member of the Senior Adult Choir. Floyd and Jean also “adopted in love” countless “children” and “grandchildren” in the church who didn’t have immediate family in the area.
Floyd’s great loves in life were his Lord, his bride, and his family. He was an exemplary husband, father, and role model, positively impacting and influencing countless others. He was a man of integrity and purpose, evincing Matthew 5:16 every day of his life.
A Homegoing Celebration for Floyd will be held Saturday April 29th at 1pm at Richland Baptist Church, 1632 George Washington Way, Richland, WA, 99354. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Richland Baptist Church Music Ministry.
I’m so sorry for your loss.
Remembering all the songs I’d play for you at your house on Cheryl’s piano. We couldn’t leave until I played something for you. You will be deeply missed Mr. Shoemaker.
I always loved his smile and friendly nature!! Rest in peace dear man!!
As an adopted daughter in Floyd and Jean’s home and church, I enjoyed learning by their example Christian love and hospitality first hand. The blessing of food while holding hands and then the inevitable sweet kiss between them afterward.
Floyd was a great barista and shared his gifts with any who would come midafternoon. He must have burned up dozens of espresso machines and used gallons of almond flavoring, all the time smiling with eyes twinkling!
You are missed, Floyd, but are with your ‘Jean’ and your Jesus. What a homegoing!💕🎉
Sending deepest condolences to your family.
We enjoyed having the Shoemaker family as neighbors. Floyd joined the last neighborhood ice cream party. Support and prayers extend to his. children Fred and Cheryl.
