James “Jim” Honeyman

James (Jim) Orville Honeyman, 69, passed away on May 5, 2023 in Pasco, Washington from health complications. Jim was born in 1953 in Reeder, North Dakota to Orville and Marian Honeyman. He was the last of 6 children. He grew up on a farm in Reeder and graduated from Reeder High School in 1971. He went to University of North Dakota and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1975. After graduating, he married his high school sweetheart Debbie Wanek, before both moving to Richland, Washington for a job at ARCO. After working several years, they had their son Steven in 1984 and then their daughter Kristen in 1987. Over 42 years, he worked for many companies out at Hanford working as a Chemical Engineer and then as a Manager until he retired in 2017. Never one to be bored, he continued to consult on various projects.

Jim was a wonderful, happy family man who spent much of his time when his children were growing up at different concerts, sports practices and events. Jim was greatly involved with boy scouts acting as a leader to support wherever he could. He was always ready to support his family and friends around him. This continued when he became a grandpa to two little girls. He was always ready to play them music, dance and sing with them.

He will be most remembered for his love of music. Playing many different instruments and singing, he started the Badger Mountain Dry Band in the early 90’s with John April and continued to play with them until he passed. He supported Three Rivers Folklife for many years and helped run their annual Tumbleweed Festival in Richland. He was always in the church choir and offered to play music there whenever he could. He was a strong Christian man, supporting his church Richland Lutheran in many capacities over the years including being in the choir, acting as choir director and on the church council.

Jim has touched many lives with his positive attitude and smile and will be greatly missed.

James is preceded in death by his parents Orville and Marian Honeyman, his mother-in-law Hazel Wanek, his brother and sister-in-law Les and Lanell Honeyman, his brother-in-law Marvin Soehren and his sister-in-law Brenda Honeyman. James is survived by his wife Debbie, his children Steven (Tahlia) Honeyman and Kristen (Adam) Donahue and his grandchildren Elizabeth and Olivia as well as his siblings Marlys (Larry) Sack, Sharon Soehren, Lynn (Twilla) Honeyman, and Randy Honeyman.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Richland Lutheran Church in Richland, Washington on Saturday May 13th at 2 PM. There will be a reception to follow. He will be laid to rest at Sunset Gardens with a family ceremony at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Good News Media Ministry at Richland Lutheran Church or Three Rivers Folklife Society.

  • As a fellow Hanford Chemical Engineer, I always looked up to Jim as the standard to strive for. As a music lover, I enjoyed listening to the Badger Mountain Dry Band and appreciated his skill as a Renaissance man. The community will miss Jim.
