From Richland, WA, US | Born in Fairfax, Minnesota
Evelyn Alma Slate
Evelyn A. Slate peacefully and expectantly went to be with her Heavenly Father on Friday, August 31, 2007. She was born in Fairfax, Minnesota, in March, 1920 to William and Florence Kiehn. She lived in Minnesota until 1936, when her family, including her two brothers Billy and Herb, moved to Issaquah, WA. In 1940, her family moved to Bremerton, WA, where her father worked at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Her two brothers volunteered to fight in World War II, and her brother Billy was killed in the war shortly after going in on D-Day. She ran the house after her mother died in 1940, and also joined the ranks of the other Rosie the Riveters by working in the shipyard during the war.
In 1947, she married L. John Slate, Jr. and worked in the Naval Hospital until adopting their son, Steve. She was very active in the Free Methodist Church, where she served as the volunteer secretary for 27 years. Her husband died in 2001 and then, after living in the same house for 52 years, moved to Richland to be closer to her family. She really enjoyed living in Alterra Wynwood in Richland, where she felt like she gained a large extended family.
She is survived by her son Steve and daughter-in-law Gail Middleton both in Richland, WA; granddaughter Shelley Tworoger husband Mike in Boston, MA; and granddaughters Melissa Slate and Kim Slate, both in Portland, OR. She frequently expressed how proud she was of her grandkids.
She liked to sew, play games especially Scrabble, write letters to her grandkids, and help others whenever she was able. She was active in many Alterra activities and worked especially hard on the food committee, suggesting some of her depression-era recipes. She will be buried in Bremerton, WA next to those in her family who all went before her. She asked for an informal memorial service at Alterra to make it easy on all her new friends. The service at Alterra will be at 1:15 on Saturday, September 8, 2007. She asked that remembrances be given to any charity that helps others.
