Patricia Ann Ryals

Patricia Ann Ryals died peacefully at Kadlec Hospital on July 9th, surrounded by her family.

Born Patricia Ann Doyle in 1936 in New Bedford, Massachussetts, she moved to Richland with her family in 1943. She graduated from Columbia High School in 1954, a member of the National Honor Society, and went on to work for General Electric for two years. In 1956 she met the love of her life, Rembert Ryals, and they were married on August 24th, 1957. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage and had four children before Rem passed away in 2011. Being a wife and mother was Patty's greatest love. After raising her children Patty returned to her love of learning and went back to school in 1979 with the intention of going back to work. She began work again at WPPSS in 1980 and eventually became the Records Manager there for many years.

More than anything, she was a woman of strong faith and optimism. A devoted member of Christ the King Church, she worked at Kadlec Hospital as a volunteer and later served as a Eucharistic Minister for the sick. Her husband suffered through a long, debilitating illness and she cared for him tirelessly and heroically. She had a strong curiosity for all things, and a rare sweetness that drew people to her. She had a mischievous sense of humor and, if you didn't keep an eye on her, she was known to cheat at cards. Puzzles, books and Frank Sinatra were a few of her favorite things. The Oregon Coast was her favorite place, especially Cannon Beach and Lincoln City. She liked nothing better than watching the sunset and taking long solitary walks there, wearing one of her trademark scarves.

She is survived by her beloved sister Maureen and sister-in-law Gayle; by children Rem, Kathleen, Paul, and Joani; by son-in-law Patrick; and by grandchildren Nathan and Emma. Patty will be missed by so many and has left a giant hole in our hearts. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Catholic Family and Child Services in Richland.

Visitation will be held today, Thursday, July 11 from 5:00pm-8:00pm with a Rosary at 7:00pm at Einan's Funeral Home in Richland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, July 12, 2013 at 1:00pm. The graveside service will follow after the reception at the church at 3:15pm at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland.

  • Rem, Kathleen, Paul and Joani,

I was so sorry to read that your mom has passed away. I would have gone to her service but was out of town.

Your family will always be one of my fondest memories of growing up in Richland. I spent a lot of time at your home.

I hope you are comforted by the many memories of your mom and by the love and support of your family and friends.

    Sincerely,

  • Maureen, I was only a small boy when I knew Patty. This comment is in lieu of what I know would be the sadness and love and friendship Patty shared with my late sister, Glenda Craddock Marquis. They shared a magnificent and wonderful friendship as girls and then as women. Her loss will be felt by many. Bill

  • Dearest Miss Patty. I only knew you a short time and in that time I grew to care very much for you. You had a way about you that just made folks want to hug you.

I will miss your visits at the office and I wish we had that chance to grab that cup of tea we talked about. Sending you on the way with love.

  • Patty,

I first met you in early 1988, at Aunty Gail’s house in Redwood City. I had fallen in love with your eldest daughter and was nervous as hell.

I was already there, sweating, when you and Rem Sr. arrived from the airport. The door opened and you gasped. “You look just like Remmie.” Those were your very words.

Later that night, everyone else was in the hot tub whooping it up. You and I are not hot tub people, Patty. We sat alone in the living room, each in our own chairs. In one hand you had a cigarette; in the other a drink. I could feel you scrutinizing me, peering at me through your large glasses. But I said nothing. After a minute or so, you inhaled, almost a sigh, and said: “So, you’re in love with my daughter.” Those were your very words. I could only say “Yes.”

In the years that we saw each other, you were always kind to me. Your hugs were real. Your love was real. You were a wonderful mother-in-law. I am forever grateful.

    Love, Douglas

  • Dear Kathy and Emma,

We met Patty just once, at Emma’s graduation celebration. She seemed to be enjoying it thoroughly, and I remember her saying your father/grandfather was right there with all of you. It was an honor to meet, however briefly, the woman who is the reason that both of you are in this world and part of our lives. We love you and we are thinking of you and your family. How lucky your mom is to have such a devoted and loving family.

All of your love to you,

    Lisa, Eva and Blair

  • I remember meeting Patty & Rem Sr. in the early 90s over pasta in Oakland when they came to see Kathy at work. I remember Patty’s laugh and her lively spirit.

She gave the world four children who grew up to be smart, interesting adults. She enjoyed the return gift of two loving grandchildren. Best to all of Patty Ryals’ family, as they say goodbye and celebrate her life.

  • Dear Rem, Kathleen, Paul, and Joani;

Our deepest sympathy to you and the family. We were saddened to hear of your loss. I know how much your Mom meant to you all, and our heart goes out to you. Our memories of your mother are of a person full of life and love, especially of her children. A woman that was accepting of her children’s friends even if they were a bit dodgy – and that is something that Kathy had in spades with us UOP’ers! Yet she was always gracious and had a smile and a kind word to say about us UOP’ers and to me that said a lot about her. Most importantly the great personality that each of the kids have is no doubt in large part to a fantastic mother who was there through thick and thin and nurtured the unique character that is reflected by each.

We are sending love and lots of hugs your way. The Chin’s
