Ronny Weissenfels

Ronny D. Weissenfels

An honorable and humble man was called to be with the Lord on September 6, 2015.  He fought a long hard battle with Heart Failure for 23 years.

Ronny Douglas Weissenfels was born in Lewiston, ID on February 21, 1948 to Ken and LaVerne Weissenfels, growing up with his brother, Gary and sister, Colleen. He could be found with his brother, Gary, tempting fate and punishment by climbing train trestles, racing trains on motorcycles, shooting out windows in abandoned houses, and any other unknown danger they could find, when not overworking his guardian angels.

Ron and his family moved to Richland, WA in 1963.  He graduated from Richland High School in 1966 and went on to CBC to receive his AA in Engineering Technology, graduating with Vocational Honors in 1971.  He was married to Anne Hodgson Clark for 16 years and had three children together, spending much time at sports events, camping, home improvement, and enjoying time with extended family.

Immediately following High School, Ron worked at the local Chevron Station as an attendant thwarting would-be robbers and mastering his skill with a squeegee.  He went on to work for 30 years with various contractors at the Hanford Site as an Engineer heading up multiple projects with proficiency and expertise.  His work and dedication to a job well done was a highly sought after trait.

He was a coach for AAU track and field and Grid-Kids Football.

Ron was always busy, finding things to work on, improve, or expand around the house. Even while his body was slowly giving away, he persevered to complete the tasks he wanted done. He enjoyed fishing on the Grande Ronde and driving around looking at rocks.  Many family trips were taken for the purpose of looking for rocks.  He mentioned that if he could, he would’ve gone into Geology. He was especially skilled at carving wood, photography, knapping, boating, and coin and gem collecting.  He was an avid eBay shopper and Corvette collector  (although he would never drive the Corvettes for fear of getting them dirty).  He especially loved to share a laugh with others, often times wearing a mustache attached to his nasal cannula in the hospital to ease any tension or sorrowful feelings, garnering friendships with the Doctors and nurses who cared for him.

Ron loved to gift others with his carvings and photography.  He wasn’t a man of many words, but could speak volumes with his gifts.  He relished their surprised and appreciative acceptance, not wanting any compensation.  He was just simply extending his love for the hobbies he was so humbly good at.

Ron especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.  Enjoying their experiences and life events, watching them in sports, supporting them in any way he could.

He adored and marveled at his wife of 27 years, Barbara Weissenfels.  He loved and cherished his 6 children, Bob (Kelly), Michelle (Matthew), Heidi (Norm aka Marv), Travis (Lauren), Brian (Cate) and Aaron and his “kids” Bella and Buddy. He was very proud of his 15 grandchildren.  He loved his sister, Colleen and brother Gary (Lee), and his father Ken.

His mother, LaVerne Weissenfels, who passed away in March 2015, I’m sure is welcoming him with open arms and a loving embrace.

A graveside service will be held at Sunset Gardens on Friday, September 11, 2015 at 11:00 am followed by a memorial service at Temple Baptist Church (4555 Arena Rd, Richland, WA 99352).

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Kadlec Foundation, noting Ron Weissenfels.  If you are unable to monetarily give, please consider Ron’s deepest wishes; not driving slow in the passing lane, sharing the shopping aisle, and being considerate of others in crowded places.

  • I really miss you Dad. I miss laughing with you and sharing stories, the crazy antics of the kids, the daily craziness. I feel lost without you. I miss your direction and love.
You told me to take of Barbara. But I’m pretty sure she’s taking care of me. I’m thankful for everything about you. I’m thankful for our family. For all the joy we shared, the tears, your teachings.
I just can’t express how much loss I feel without you here. You’re on my mind all day, everyday.
    Until I see you again…

  • Barbara,
I feel your pain – been there done that. I didn’t know until today about your loss. I’m so sorry. I remember working with you when your son had to drive Ron home with his first(??) heart attack. My work has taken me further away from your work so I have unfortunately not seen you in a long time. Take care of yourself.

  • So sorry to hear of Ron’s passing. He was a kind and gentle soul, with a sense of humor that often caught me off guard! I knew him in High School and then later we worked together at Hanford when he trainined me in Chemical Mgmt. He was so proud of his family and often brought pictures to share. He loved going to Alaska to fish and loved every minute there. I will keep his family in my prayers during this difficult time. God’s Blessings.

  • 2 Corinthians 1:3-5 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is the Father who is full of mercy and all comfort. He comforts us every time we have trouble, so when others have trouble, we can comfort them with the same comfort God gives us. We share in the many sufferings of Christ. In the same way, much comfort comes to us through Christ.”
My heartfelt sympathy goes to you all, where I have been Ron’s classmate through high school and occasionally at CBC. Although I cannot be there, but know that God is with you all and take His comfort and joy be with you.

  • Ron was my friend from our high school days. I visited his home many times and met both his parents, they mirrored mine. I hung out at McGee’s Chevron a lot when Ron was working. Fun times like when Larry Snyder came screaming in the lot in a former state police car (bought at an auction)with an interceptor engine, pretty cool. Of course he burnt rubber when he left. Ron was with me when I met my wife Cathy, now together for 46 years. Ron told me he picked Bobby’s middle name after my last .We went hunting for Rattlesnakes the week before I left for Marine boot camp(April 68) and caught about 6 snakes and got our picture in the TC Herald sports section. I still have the story out of the paper. He was a good man and will be missed. I will pray for his family during this emotional time.
