Bernard
John McClain (Bud or BJ), from Richland, Washington, was born November 20, 1916
in Lima, Ohio to George Webster and Florence Rose (Severns) McClain. He was raised on a farm outside of town with
Viola (Sharp), Lawrence, twins Walter and Waldo, Roy, Mary (Widner), and
Edward. Bud graduated from Shawnee High
School near Lima. He served in the Air
Force from 1942-1945 and was stationed in Texas during the war. His early jobs were butchering and driving a
truck for Lima Packing Company. Later he
moved into food sales, serving as a broker for Libby Foods and other
companies. He retired from the State of
Indiana, where he was a buyer for schools, hospitals, and prisons. Bernard was married 79 years ago on June 9 to
Gladys Gertrude (Vorhees) McClain, from Wapakoneta, Ohio. He is survived by her. They had four children, Bernard John Jr
(deceased), Dennis Lynn (Marilyn) from Redwood Valley, CA, Fred Eugene from
Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Linda Kay (Jim) Bauer from Richland, WA. They have seven grandchildren: Tamera Kay Kish, Tina Marie Pollard, Renay
Elizabeth McClain, Matthew Kent McClain, Shari Lynn McClain, Fred McClain, and
Elizabeth Claire (McClain) Cronin. Their
six great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren will miss their
Bampaw. He will be remembered as the
supplier of ice cream cones, and story teller extraordinare. Bernard is preceded in death by his parents,
all his siblings, and son Bernard John Jr.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Bonaventure Retirement Center, 1800 Bellerive Dr in Richland, WAon Friday, November 24, 2017 at 1:30pm.
A service will be held in Ohio at a later date.
