Mary Gladys Clark

On October 24, 2017, Mary Gladys Clark, at age 98, went home to join her Lord Jesus and many family members in Heaven. She was born to E.A. and Estelle Sowell on January 19, 1919 on a homestead near Plains, CO, in the middle of a blizzard. Her early years were spent in Texas, eventually graduating in 1938 from Holly, CO, High School as valedictorian of her class.

She married James A. Clark on February 5, 1939. They were blessed with two children, James and Roxanne. They moved to the Tri-Cities in 1947 where Mary Gladys worked in various bookkeeping jobs until retiring from Kadlec Hospital. She joined Richland Baptist Church in 1956 and remained an active member there for over 50 years, serving in many capacities. She will be lovingly remembered as a wonderful mother, talented seamstress and quilter (every stitch by hand), cook and homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers (Buck and Ancel), and one sister (Elwanda). She is survived by her son, James (Connie) of Lacey, WA, her daughter, Roxanne (Mitch) Grundmeier of Kennewick, WA, brother, Harley Sowell (Johnnie) of Fresno, CA and her sister, Barbara Sowell of Richland, WA. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and her great-great-grandchildren.

The family offers their sincere thanks to Legacy House for several years of loving care. They would also like to thank Heartlinks Hospice Care for their kind and caring attention to Mary Gladys’ medical needs in her final months.

Graveside service will be held on November 11, 2017 at 10:00am at Sunset Gardens in Richland. A Memorial service will follow at Richland Baptist Church, 1632 George Washington Way, Richland, WA, at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Richland Baptist Church or the charity of your choice.

  • I remember this sweet lady as Matron of Honor in my wedding to Mary Gladys Foster on October 12. 1966, with my wife becoming another Mary Gladys Clark. She and James A. were very gracious to us, setting up a reception at Richland Baptist Church after the ceremony. I was saddened to hear about their marriage dissolution and the death of James A. before I left the Tri-Cities. My Mary Gladys Clark passed away in 2008, and I’m thinking that God blessed her life by knowing she had a mentor and role model with her identical name. My condolences to the family and may God bless all who came under the influence of this Godly woman.

  • Mary Gladys was always so special to my family. She and our Mom, Anne, had a very special friendship. She was a magnificent woman of God and she is no doubt surrounded by so many, including our Mom, who were there to welcome her to Heaven. Saying goodbye is hard and our loved ones leave such a void in our lives but it is so precious and so comforting to know they are with Jesus.
My prayers are with your family.
