Robert DeWitt Walker
Robert D. Walker, long-time Pasco barber, 72, died Sunday, September 2, 2001 enroute to the Hospice House. He suffered a short but intense battle with lung cancer . Bob was born December 15, 1928 in Arnold NE to Clarence and Gladys Walker, joining his sister Cleo Jean and making their little family complete. The Walkers moved to Sheridan WY when Bob was four years old. He attended elementary school in Sheridan and often reminisced of the benefits in growing up in a small town. The family moved again ...this time to Seattle in 1943. Bob was active in sports all through school. Bob enlisted in the Marine Corps at age 17 and was stationed at El Toro CA, where he ran the base barbershop with ten barbers working for him. This was followed by a four- year stint in the Army stationed in Germany. He was a sergeant and he was on the 16th Infantry's Ranger basketball and football teams. In May of 2000 Bob enjoyed a 50th reunion in Atlantic City with his old buddies that were part of the European Championship football team of 1950. Bob has quite a scrapbook of that period of his life. He was known as ''Crazy Legs Walker''. After the service, in 1953, he came to Pasco where his father, Clarence, had opened a barbershop at 112 South 4th. Father and son worked together for many years. Bob bought the shop in 1963 and continued barbering what he called ''his faithful good-Iooking clientele'' until illness forced him to quit in late July. He was one who loved his work and rarely took any vacations or missed work because of sickness. In his earlier years Bob was active in Pasco Jaycees, Pasco Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis and was the first president of the Columbia Basin College Booster Club, serving seven years. He sponsored and participated on a bowling team for 34 years. At one point he sponsored and coached a basketball team in the Twin City Independent League. He was a member of the Elks, American Legion and the Tri-City Country Club. Surviving Bob are his wife, Marilyn in Pasco, and three children: Linda and Jon Drake of Monmouth OR, Sally Smith of Herndon V A, David Walker of Pasco and Bob's beloved granddaughter , Brianna. Close to his heart were his special ''kids'' Tammy and Jessica. He is also survived by his sister and her husband, Cleo Jean and Charles Jensen, and their two daughters: Janet and MikeYoung and Lisa and Dennis Garberg and their children. Bob was very fond of Marilyn's family andleaves them and many wonderful friends behind, as well.
