Lillian Ovidia Whiting

Lillian Ovidia Whiting 91 passed away Monday Dec. 31, 2001 in Richland Wa. She was born March 3, 1910 a few miles south of Shellbrook Sask. Canada to Lewis K. and Marie Veum Stene.

Lillian shared a home without electricity or running water with seven siblings -- three brothers and four sisters. She grew up on their farm and attended the Brighthome school near Shellbrook.

Her brother George formed a ranching partnership with Lloyd A. Whiting and through this association Lillian started a friendship and later marriage to Lloyd that would last for over fifty-six years.

They were married Nov. 1, 1928 and shortly afterwards they moved to Spokane Wa. where all four of their children were born. In 1949 the family moved to Richland Wa.

Lillian loved to cook and take care of her house and garden. Friends and neighbors were always welcome in her neatly kept home where she lived for 53 years. She was a faithful member of the Community of Christ church The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for over seventy years. During those years, Lillian was her husband's steadfast helpmate as he served as Pastor and Patriarch-Evangelist.

Lillian was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd, daughter and son-in-law Dolores Maxine and Robert William Hyde, daughter-in-law Virginia Rasmussen Whiting and granddaughters Wendy Hyde and Amy Madsen and also her 3 brothers, Ervin, Leonard, and George, and 2 sisters, Alice and Clara.

She is survived by her two sisters Alice Gjertina and Ann Victoria, son Raymond Duane Whiting and Joanne Dahl of Auburn, son Gary Keith Whiting and wife Sandra of Richland, daughter Kathleen Marie Madsen and husband Kent of Spokane, 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

The family wishes to express it's deepest appreciation to all the friends and neighbors that visited, prayed and assisted in her time of need. A special thanks is extended to Lillian's wonderful friend Emma Lou Weis who was always there for our beloved Mother and Grandmother.

The graveside service will be on Saturday, January 5, 2002 at 11 :00 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Richland.

A memorial service to celebrate Lillian's life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Community of Christ church 1004 Long in Richland followed by a potluck dinner.

  • What a wonderful and caring person Aunt Lillian was! She was a true blessing to many folk with a bond of beautiful and genuine love for her family, immediate and extended. Although distance has certainly limited our sharing one on one time together, my appreciation and love of her is as strong as ever. Our sincere and loving condolences and prayers to all of you as you grieve over your loss, yes, while at the same time celebrating Lillian’s living of life. We’ll be grieving and celebrating along with you in spirit on Saturday and beyond. May God Bless!

  • Our family wishes to thank all of Mom’s friends and family that supported her thru prayers , visits and other contacts during her last illness and throughout the years. She often said how truely fortunate she was to have so many friends and family. We would especially like to thank all of those who performed and participated in the beautiful grave side and funeral services and all the effort that went into the buffet dinner after those services. We offer our whole hearted thanks.
