Four years later they moved to Richland, Washington, where they have resided ever since. Douglas and Marlene were born in Richland. Doris was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who prayed for her family daily. She was known for her garden and enjoyed tending her roses and many other plants in her beautiful yard. She was also skilled at painting, ceramics, and sewing. She was active in the First Baptist Church and volunteer work. She was a member of the Kadlec Auxiliary and faithfully helped at Same Day Surgery and at the Information Desk two days a week. She is survived by Clarence, her husband of 52 years, their children: son, Bruce and Toni Strand of Des Moines, Washington; daughter, Karen and Dale Winslow of Greenville, Illinois; son, Douglas and Karen Strand of Oceanside, California; and daughter, Marlene and Daniel Brennan of San Diego, California; and her ten grandchildren. • I first met Doris and Clarence in the spring of 1956. I was 4 years old at the time, some 46 years ago.

They were both pillars of the community, the church, and icons of my childhood and teen years. From the first “Vacation Bible School” that I attended at the invitation of Bruce and Karen, until my early adult years, Doris and Clarence were there, leading by example. I am confident that their faith and prayers kept many of us safe during those often difficult teenage years.

She leaves a legacy of a mother’s love and her success is shown through the lives of her children. I will miss just knowing she was there, but I too rely on the promise of being together in the presence of our Lord and Saviour. My prayer is that we all do as well as parents.

    I love you all, Rick

  • I must confess, I came here not knowing how poor I was.

Since my family moved from Washington when I was only six years old I fear I do not remember much about Mrs. Strand. I know my older brothers and sister remember her better than I… as I still have fond recollections of years ago hearing my sister telling how exciting and funny it was when she was accompanying the Strands on a trip on a winding mountain road when the streering wheel popped off in Mr. Srand’s hands!

As I read Mrs. Strand’s obituary I was impressed. Born in a log cabin! Rode horseback 4 miles to school!! Went to school and studied the Bible and nursing, met and married a man she loved and lived with for 52 years!! What a legacy!

But as I read through the comments friends have left, I have become even more moved. What a truly amazing woman and what a truly amazing life!

Greetings and fond rememberances not just from around the USA, but lives she touched from the Philippines, and Sweden, and South Africa. United States Presidents don’t do any better than that!

As I read, I see she left a lasting impression on others lives her entire life: from her youth in Montana through her adult years. From the youngest VBS children all the way through to those individuals that she volunteered with at the hospital she touched many lives.

I’ve discovered that the trip with the faulty steering wheel was one to church camp!

As I re-read others’ memories of this lady whom I cannot recall, I realize this is not just the touching story of kindly wife and mother, it is a Godly heritage the Stand family shares. I cannot say that I am sad for your lose, because I am envious of your riches. You will never be poor as long as you hold these precious memories close, because they are not just fond memories, they are records being kept in heaven of a woman who walked with God.

I trust that I will use this legacy from my parents’ dear friend to work harder, walk taller, and aspire to greater things so that others will see in me the example I see in Doris Strand.

  • We are so thankful for the friendship of the Strand family. Allene and I remember the special evening we had together last furlough, when I finally learned what Clarence did all those years at Hanford, and where we ate a delicious meal cooked by Doris.

We’re praying for you across the ocean. For God’s comfort in time of loss. I think it is times like this that Jesus’ promises of Eternal Life mean more than ever. And that Heaven seems much closer and more real than it did before.
