10/24/1948 — 09/09/2003
From Richland, WA, US | Born in Seattle, Washington
D’Arcy Baker
D'Arcy Marie Baker, beloved wife and mother, entered the peace of eternal life with our Heavenly Father on September 9, 2003. She was a constant light of inspiration and love to her family and friends, and will be profoundly missed.
D'Arcy was born on October 24, 1948 and grew up in Seattle, Washington. She graduated from Queen Anne High School in 1966. She married Ron Baker in 1969, and they moved to Richland, Washington. D'Arcy finished her Bachelor of Arts in Education at Central Washington University in 1970 and ultimately obtained a Master's Degree from Tri-City branch of Washington State University in 1997.
D'Arcy's primary focus throughout her life was her family. She devoted her energy and love to assuring that her children grew up surrounded by love, full of strength, and self-reliant. D'Arcy also passed on her faith, creativity, and strong values to her children. She was always a quiet example of strength and bravery to those around her, especially in recent years.
In addition to her family, D'Arcy left a significant legacy from her career as an educator in the Richland School District. As a teacher at Marcus Whitman Elementary for over 17 years, she made a positive difference in the lives of many young children. Her creative and innovative teaching style helped her 4th grade students reach their full potential and fostered independent thinking. She will be remembered particularly for her favorite teaching unit on birds in which she integrated the various aspects of learning and helped her students develop a love of science and nature.
Over the years, D'Arcy had many interests and was always trying new activities. Some of these interests included: choir, sewing, raising chickens and rabbits, supporting and refereeing recreational soccer, sailing in her Hobie Cat, decorating wedding cakes for friends' weddings and gingerbread houses for local businesses, kayaking, crafts of all kinds, gardening, designing and constructing a backyard pond and waterfall, as well as participating in many Volksmarches throughout Washington and Oregon. Her favorite hobby of all was bird watching. Her infectious enthusiasm for birds has inspired many young and old to appreciate birds in a new light.
D'Arcy is survived by her husband of 34 years, Ronald B. Baker; daughter, Angela Baker Kennewick; son, Aaron Baker Boston; stepfather, Robert Nolte, Jr. Bellingham; aunt, Molly Coates Seattle; mother-in-Law, Bea Baker Pasco; and brother-in-law, Paul E. Baker Los Angeles.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Tri-Cities Cancer Center, 7350 W. Deschutes Ave., Bldg. A, Kennewick, WA 99336 or the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice, 2108 W. Entiat, Kennewick WA 99336. A memorial service will be held at Central United Protestant Church in Richland on September 12, 2003 at 4:30 pm.
From D’Arcy’s obituary it sounds like her life was full and she should have no regrets. I will never forget her kindness in consenting to make Scott & I’s wedding cake for our reception over 11 years ago. It was so beautiful and yummy! She truly was a talented person and one you always enjoyed being around.
What a blessing D’Arcy Baker was to children at Marcus Whitman! Three of my children had her either as their regular 4th grade teacher or as a math teacher. During her bird unit my daughter insisted we take a trip to the store to find suet to leave out for birds…
When my son was struggeling in math, she went beyond the call of duty to pin point the problem and help turn him in the right direction. He’s in high school now, and math is his favorite subject!
She even made a point to encourage me as a parent. As I stayed after school one afternoon with my son to help him clean out his incredibly messy desk, Mrs. Baker assured me that she used to do the same with her son, and he’s a very succesful man today. I needed to hear those words at about that time.
I thank God for the lives she blessed. I thank you, her family, for sharing her with us.
Sincerely,
Kendra Koopman
We are so sorry for your loss. D’Arcy was such a great friend of my moms. She made a beautiful wedding cake for my sister Leslie’s wedding. She was a wonderful teacher, and a kind and loving person. She will truly be missed. With love, The Huntley Family

Mrs. Baker was my 4th grade teacher at Marcus Whitman in 2001. She was the greatest teacher I ever had. She taught me everything and has been my success with my first year at Carmichael Jr. High. I will miss her tremendously.

Dear Bakers;
I am very sorry for your loss and will keep you all in my prayers. D’arcy made the world a much better place, just by being here. She helped me conquer math when I went back to college, she encouraged me when I set out to get my first post college job. She had a real gift for teaching and enriching the lives of everyone who knew her. D’arcy’s passing is a huge loss.
