Donald Forrester DeLine

Donald Forrester DeLine passed away on November 02, 2003 in Kennewick, Washington. Don was born to William DeLine and Viola Jeffery on January 8, 1916 in Cardiff, New York. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his brother William “Bill” DeLine and his second wife of 21 years, Kathleen J. Klofft.

Don was hard working and persistent in his goal to provide his children a better life than the one he knew. In 1949, with five children in the family, he purchased a plot of land on Hinsdale Road outside the town of Camillus, New York. At this location, he built a modest home with just hand tools non-electric and his relentless determination. Later, he hand-dug a basement to accommodate his growing family. In 1979, he moved from New York to Kennewick, Washington. At the young age of 65, near the old town of Hover, Don set up home once more. He seemed tireless to all that knew him and could out-work men half his age.

Don was as diverse as the jobs he worked in life. In the 30’s, he worked as a baker for A&P Bakery in Syracuse, New York. The bakery trade carried throughout his life. His children and grandchildren loved the smell of his homemade breads, pies, and goodies. In 1941, he joined New York Central Railroad and retired from the railroad system in 1976. Don was also a 32-degree mason in the Masonic Temple. He normally worked two jobs at any one time--the railroad at night and construction during the day. In the construction off-season, Don repaired radios and TV’s. At one point, he operated a dry-cleaning business too. He was a man of many talents--a true jack-of-all trades and a master of some.

Don left behind seven children: Carol Sobkoviak of Richland, Washington; Dona Twomey of Renton, Washington; Donald DeLine of Corpus Christi, Texas; Mari Bernhardt of Aurora, Illinois; Richard DeLine of Massena, New York; Thomas DeLine of Liverpool, New York; Jeff DeLine of Kennewick, Washington; twenty grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Our father and grandfather will be missed.

  • What a marvelous father to have been so loved and respected by his children! If they are a tribute to a life well lived, then for sure Don DeLine left this world far better than he found it.

  • Dear Papa,

I can’t tell you how much I’ll miss you. You have been an advisor, challenger, debater, and a source of inspiration. You have been a been a pain in the neck and sometimes even lower. I know you always loved all of us and would never let any of us want even if it meant you would do with out. Up to the very end you knew you had seven childen and you did your head count during the time you were dying. I thank you for taking your demise out of our hands as you asked for your morphine every hour and you knew exactly what you were doing, didn’t you?!! How typical!! I thank each and everyone of my siblings for their support you would have been so proud of us as we not only cried for your loss put laughed together and shared so many fond memories of our life with you. To you Papa, I thank you for all you have done and all you have been, you have made me what I am today and also what my children have inherited, the humor, the intelligence, the critical thinking, and the courage.

  • There are famous men who will be missed by more, but none that will be missed as much. None could have been more loved than you.

Your sense of humor, your witty little sayings, your poetry, your music are all stuffed away in my heart for ever to stay.

You were my port in a storm. I needed and respected your opinion. I tried to ask you so much about your life so that I may have experienced a little of what you did, what you felt and what you saw. You always amazed me on what you knew and what you remembered. Thank you for keeping me on the straight and narrow path without you I would have gotten lost.

May you rest in peace, may your pain be no more.

You will be on the wind, the sun, and the rain. You will be in every rose I grow and every tear I shead. Good-bye my loving papa until we are together again. Your loving daughter Dona
