Gregory Edward Hansen
Gregory Edward Hansen, age 41, was called to be with his creator on Sunday, February 15, 2004 while going to the Daytona 500 race in Daytona Beach, Florida. Greg was born on March 4, 1962 in Junction City, Kansas. He moved to Richland, Washington with his family in June of 1965 and attended Christ The King and Richland school district schools graduating from Columbia High School in June 1980.
After service in the US Marine Corp he returned to Richland where he attended Columbia Basin Junior College. He helped to found the engineering club at CBC and was its first president. He subsequently attended the Tri-Cities graduate center on a work-study program through Rockwell Engineering receiving his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington.
After working on the Hanford project for a few years Greg went to Enid, Oklahoma where he worked for the Great Lakes Carbon Company. He then returned to the Tri-Cities where he again worked at the Hanford project. He met Virginia Jenny Linney while working in the Parsons office at Hanford and they were married on November 8, 1991. In this time period Greg coached Little League teams in the Richland American Little League and youth basketball teams. He truly enjoyed working with the kids.
In January 1995 Greg and his family moved to Valparaiso, Indiana where he worked as the Plant Engineer for Alpha Owens Corning Company. In August 2002 he was transferred to Lakeland, Florida as the Plant Manager of the AOC plant.
Greg loved life, he enjoyed his family and friends and he enjoyed hosting family or friends that came to visit him in Valparaiso and Lakeland. He was a loving and generous Son, Husband, Father, and family member and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Greg is survived by his wife Virginia Jenny, daughters Heidi, Shelia and Alex, as well as his parents Leo and Shelia Hansen, sisters Sally Lehmann, Janet McAdie, and Mary Jo Koch, and a brother Michael. Eight nieces and nephews, his Grandfather Rev. C. E. Rains, two uncles and an aunt, also survive him.

Greg and I were the best of friends in high school. We enjoyed many of the same kinds of things, mostly cars.
We worked at the same restaurant for a while also.
I enjoyed Greg’s friendship because he always had a smile on his face and enjoyed life so intensely. He always had great ideas for things to do and was very energetic about getting them done. One our most memorable times together was when we went out joy riding in his parents car one night. He let me drive even though I didn’t have my license. I went too fast and rolled the car down the side of a hill. Greg covered for me and it was discovered later that I was driving. After everything settled we were still good friends and could laugh about it. Greg’s parents were so cool through that ordeal. It left an impression on me. I ran away from home later that year and Mrs. Hansen saw me hanging out behind the school. She asked me if I would go home if she gave me a ride. I didn’t want to go home but I knew I could trust her advise because she had been so kind to me when I wrecked her car earlier in the year. Greg’s dad continues to be one of my customer’s at the local mercedes dealership and I really enjoy seeing him. Greg will be missed and I look forward to seeing him in heaven.
Dear Sheila, Leo, Janet & families: Our deepest sympathies are with you right now and may also the peace and love that only comes from the Lord also be with you and your families in this trying time in your lives. I can’t imagine the pain of losing a child at any age and my brother at any age; my prayers are with you all and I’m so very sorry that you had to go through this. Lean on each other for support and lean on the Lord, He will help you through.
I went to school with Greg at Christ the King and remember him well. He was pretty quiet in grade school. I was on the bomber alumni website when I saw his name, and just wanted to express my condolences. I am very sorry for your loss and will pray for you. Greg would have known me as Patty Crowley.
May beautiful memories of Greg give you strength at this time……
Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal….
My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Hansen family.

I will always remember Greg as a young man- as someone who made me laugh, and as a daredevil, completely fearless- he would do almost anything on a dare.
But my fondest memory of Greg is a much simpler moment- when we were seniors in high school, and got out of an assembly early. Greg, Ned and I drove to the A&W to get some food, then went to Howard Amon park, near the boat launch, to eat. As we were eating, a red car came by us and drove right down the boat launch and into the water- what I now know is an Amphibicar. We literally stopped in mid bite. Watching in complete dumbfounded silence as the car drove across the river, we looked at each other and then burst out laughing. Just a group of kids being amazed at how new and unexpected life can be.
Of all the people I have known in my life, Greg is one of the few I can say that has lived his life to the fullest. If I could talk to him back in high school, I’d tell him to do everything the sameok, almost everything. Great career, great family, great kids. He did very well with the time he was given. I just wish he could have stuck around longer- I was looking forward to getting into mischief with him as senior citizens.
General Patton once said that it was “foolish and wrong-headed to mourn the dead-rather, we should thank God such men ever existed.”.
I may be foolish and wrong- headed, but just the same-
Thank God.

may our prayers and love bring gregs loved ones some solace in their pain
Dear Leo,
We are so saddened to hear about yiur son Greg. He was much too young and must too promising to succumb to such an early fate. But, such is life! We are all just hanging by a thin thread, never knowing when it might just snap.
I much enjoyed working with you on the development and expansion of the interactive reator monitoring system, and will not forget your tenacity in the face of daunting problems. Our heart felt condolences to you and Greg’s entire family. George and Nelly Sofer

I am sorry for your loss.
Mr. and Mrs. Hansen
I am so sorry to learn about the loss of Greg. This seems so unfair at the age of 41. In this world there are no guarantees and I believe our creator has his own plans. Though so many years ago, I feel the immense need to apologize for causing so much trouble when the fish were thrown in the swimming pool in Humboldt. It was my idea. I do believe God has a sense of humor and we will be forgiven for this.
God be with your family in this time of need. My prayers are with Greg and you.

I knew Greg best way back in high school as we were classmates together at Columbia High. Greg always had a great attitude, fun to be around, and as I recall a very intelligent person. He was well liked by many people in our class. My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Hansen family.
Jen,
I was sorry to read about your loss in the paper today. I know how hard of a time this can be, and no words will make it any better. You will be in my thoughts .
God Bless
pd
Jenny,
I remember the first time I met Greg. It was on the ball field, he was coaching my son.
He trully loved kids. We hit off a friendship immediatley that lasted until he left the area in 1995. Fortunatley before he left the area I was able to introduce you to Greg.
The rest of the time, I’m sure, was a beautiful life together you shared all though drastically shortnend.
You both will be in my my thoughts and prayers.
Bob
