Betty Mae Alvord Allwine

Betty Mae Alvord Allwine, age 77, of Richland, passed away March 17, 2004 at home with many of her family by her side. Her courageous strength to battle Lou Gehrig’s disease “her way” was a testament of how she lived her wonderful life.

She was born in Centralia, WA on May 19, 1926 to Margaret and Eugene Alvord. She was the oldest of 5 siblings.

Betty Mae was an accomplished musician who began taking piano and violin lessons at age 6. Her love for music carried throughout her life, playing her violin and singing with her beautiful soprano voice. She was a member of the Idaho Washington symphony orchestra and several United Methodist church orchestras and sang in the Messiah on many occasions.

She began her life’s journey attending the U of W in a nursing degree program, but soon after in 1945 she met her husband of 58 years, Kenneth Allwine and within a few short weeks they began their lives together. Her dreams of becoming an R.N. were put on hold to raise her children. Nine children later, and jobs of managing her families feed and seed company, waitressing, book keeping, school bus driver, where her nickname of lead foot became known, and family matriarch, Betty Mae received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from L.C.S.C. in 1984. She began her career at Tri-State Memorial Hospital in Clarkston WA, where she was known as a truly caring Critical Care Nurse who always put her patients first. In 1992 she completed her Masters in Nursing from WSU and influenced many colleagues to continue their education no matter what their age.

Betty Mae was a member of The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution; The General Society of Mayflower Descendants; Past Worthy Matron, Order of the Eastern Star; Mother Advisor, Rainbow Girls; The Social Order of the Beauceant, and Statewide Committee Woman for Children’s Orthopedic Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her daughters Suzanne Turner and Joanne Baker, parents Margaret and Eugene Alvord.

She is survived by her husband Kenneth Allwine, Sr, daughter Marsha and Fred Miller of Rochester and family; daughter Brenda and Dwayne Medlin of Temple, Texas and family; son Jerry and Cherie Allwine of Richland and family; son Greg and Laura Allwine of Enumclaw and family; son Gene Allwine of Pullman, WA and his daughter; son Darel and Sally Allwine of Richland and family; son Darin and Cindy Allwine of Woodbridge, VA and family; Suzanne’s children and grandchildren and Joanne’s children and grandchildren; sisters Barbara McGhee of Puyallup; Margenia Simmons of Oregon City, OR; Martha McNeill of Puyallup; brother Dick Alvord of Seattle All together she had 9 children, 23 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

Memorial Service will be held at Einan's Funeral Home, 915 By-Pass Hwy 240 in Richland on Saturday, March 27 at 1:00 PM.

Donations can be made in her behalf to Children's Hospital Foundation PO Box 50020 / S-200 Seattle, WA 98145-5020, or at www.seattlechildrens.org/home/ways_to_help/default.asp

  • To Ken and Family…..I want to express my deepest sympathy of losing Betty Mae.I worked with her for a few years in the ICU at Tri-State. She was a wonderful mentor, and very dedicated nurse. I learned of her growing up on the West side…Her love for Ken,and her family…….She would tell wonderful stories………A few things that make me smile are the time she dyed her hair a carrot red to see our reaction……..oh she laughed and laughed about it…..The color was such a shock………Her “screams” of fear over spiders…

“Judas Priest”…….When her car got hit outside Tri-State… She was a wonderful friend…..Someone I will always remember….God Bless Each One of You!

    MISS ME-BUT LET ME GO

When I come to the end of the road,

And the sun has set for me,

I want no rites in a gloom filled room.

Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little-but not too long

and not with your heads bowed low.

Remember the love that we once shared: Miss me-but let me go.

For this is a journey we all must take,

    and each must go alone.

Its all of the Master’s Plan,

A step on the road home.

When you are lonely and sick of heart,

Go to the friends we know:

and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds,

    Miss me-but let me go.

  • My mother has always been a big part of my life. I don’t think a week went by that we didn’t speak to each other. I always looked forward to talking to her. I will miss her so much. I will miss her laughter, her advice, her support, her touch, her cooking, her doing my laundry when she would visit. In a world full of self, my mom thought of everyone else before herself. She dedicated her life to her family and to her fellow man. I love my mom dearly. God’s plan is perfect, He knew we would miss our loved ones, so He made it possible for us to meet again. I love you mom.

  • Dennis and I wish to express our sorrow over the loss of you mother and grandmother.

We will always have special memories of Betty’s voice as she sang for Brenda and Dwayne’s wedding. We really enjoyed all the times we were able to spend with Ken and Betty as we shared our grandchildren Preston and Chandler. God Bless you all at this time. Marilyn and Dennis Medlin

  • Ken:

So saddened to read of your loss in LMT. The love and admiration you two had/have for each other and family was comparable to none.

The value of true friendship can not be graphed on any chart…no scale on earth can weigh their worth… except the human heart. My heart is heavy.

    Fraternally,
