Frances Frick

In Memory of....

Frances Frick

The Lord called Frances Frick home on December 29th, 2004 at the age of 82. Frances passed away after a courageous battle against injury and illness, and re-joined her parents, Curtis and Willa Odum, and siblings, Charles, Meta, Edna and Dora Ruth in heaven. Frances was born on November 9th, 1922 in Marion, Illinois, the second oldest of 6 children. She studied Education at the University of Southern Illinois, and later eloped to Missouri to marry her highschool sweetheart, Carl Frick. After giving birth to her only child, Bob, Frances and Carl moved to Richland, Washington in 1943, as Carl accepted a new job opportunity with the Corp of Engineers. Not only was Frances one of the first 'settlers' in Richland, but she was also one of the first telephone operators at Hanford. Her career in the telecommunications industry soared, and she continued to work her way up through management over the years.

Frances led an exciting and active life. She loved music and theatre, and was a proud member of the Richland Light Opera, singing joyfully for over 20 years. During her earlier years in Richland, Frances was very involved in the Central United Protestant church programs; she taught Sunday school to youngsters, and worked with the senior high fellowship group. She also pioneered a 'fruitcake' baking program that helped finance foreign exchange students in the area. Frances was a 50 year member of the Eastern Star organization and was an officer in the Gentrix Women's group for General Electric. Frances's greatest joy in life was always found in her family. She proudly supported and nurtured her son's basketball talents, never missing a game at Columbia High School and Eastern State College. She showered her family with her love and attention, and spent much of her free time traveling with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending their sports activities, taking them to Broadway musicals and concerts, and planning family events. Frances's love for family extended out to her nieces and nephews, and to all of her family members back in IlIiinois.

It is difficult to capture in words all that Frances has meant to her family members and friends, as she has touched so many lives with her kindness, love, and support. She will always be remembered for her graciousness, unselfishness, and ability to shower people with gifts of love. She was charitable, giving and beautiful both inside and out. Frances would not want us to mourn our loss; rather, she would want us to smile and laugh, and to celebrate her truly extraordinary life. Survivors include her loving husband, Carl Frick; brother, Benton Odum Janet; son, Bob Frick Pat; grandchildren, Becky Haverfield Dan, Scott Frick, Wendy Frick; great-grandchildren, Sierra, Savanna, Cheyenne and Caden Haverfield. Additional survivors include numerous loved nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be on Monday, January 3rd, 4:00 - 8:00 pm at Einan's Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, January 4th, 2:30 pm at Einan's Funeral Home, 915 By-Pass Hwy, Richland. Graveside Service will follow at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. A Memorial Reception will be held after the services at the Red Lion Hotel Columbia Room, Richland, at 5:00 pm

  • We will miss Aunt Frances very much as she was always full of life and loved her family so much. She was so good to everyone and encouraged us in anything we wanted to do. She loved to hear news from Spokane and about her great-nephew Curt and great-niece Christina. She was so excited to finally meet Christina’s baby daughter, Ellie, on October 30. We know she’s with God and is happy to see all her family who has gone before her. We love you, Uncle Carl, and you are in our thoughts and prayers always.

Butch is Frances’ nephew, son of her sister Meta Bishop.

  • Francis hired me through local the high school co-op program to work for her Telecommunications Organization at Rockwell International in 1983. I am sure that this had nothing to do with her long-standing friendship with Dottie Rose, my grandmother. One My favorite memories of Francis was our conversations about the academic and sports-related successes of her grandchildren as I was also an athlete. As hard work would have it, I was selected as one of the Tri-City Herald’s Athletes of the Week. When I came to work that day, Francis had posted signs throughout the building which said, “The Athlete of the Week’s Grandma Works Here!!”. Francis’s thoughtful postings included the TCH article, my picture, ribbons and bows. As a special treat I was taken out to lunch at the Richland Hanford House. Going to lunch at the Hanford House was a special treat. It was at one of these lunches with Francis that I did something that still horrifies me to this day. After lunch, Francis and I were walking back to the office. We had to cross the extremely busy George Washington Way Street which includes 5 lanes of traffic. The closest two lanes of traffic had stopped and Francis and I proceeded across the cosswalk. It was the next lane that proved disasterous. As I was closest to the oncoming car, I could see that the driver was not slowing so I threw out my left arm to stop Francis. As the car sped right by us, I wildly and obscenely gestured with my right hand. She never said a word about my transgression but “flipping the bird” in front of Francis will stay with me forever. My love and prayers are with your family.

  • Aunt Frances was always such an important part of our lives and was always thought of as a second grandmother. She was so giving and fun to be with. I have many memories of her from when I was growing up. One of which includes when we would visit her she would bring out a brush and let my cousins and I brush her long, beautiful hair. We will miss her terribly and all of our love goes out to Uncle Carl and the rest of the Frick Family. We very much wish we could be there.
