EINANS FUNERAL HOME
Harriet Hattie Ann McMakin passed away on Christmas eve, 2004, at Kadlec Hospital in Richland at the age of 82. She died peacefully after family members expressed their love and goodbyes. She passed from this world to the next, to rejoin her beloved husband Carl, other family members, and her Savior.
Hattie was born September 3, 1922 in Canton, Ohio, to Olga and Harry Lee Brothers, after whom she was named. She also lived in Virginia and Pennsylvania. A tomboy as a child, she excelled in sports and math. As a preachers daughter, she was brought up with a strong moral sense, which she steadfastly held throughout her life. She first met Carl McMakin, whose father was also a preacher, when both were in their teens. Carl was attracted to Hatties honesty and strong character. The two were married in 1946 in Isle of Wight, Virginia, while Carl was on leave from the Army. Carl often admitted with a twinkle in his eye that he married her because she would keep him on the straight and narrow road.
Newlyweds Carl and Hattie moved to Richland so Carl could continue his work at Hanford. Their house on Delafield Street grew lively with the addition of six children over the years. Hattie was known as a serious, family-oriented, Godly woman who once contributed financially to the overseas adoption of a neighbors child.
Hattie and Carl were charter members of Richland Assembly of God Church in Richland and in 1985, began attending Central Church. They loved attending family Bible camps every summer, and Hattie was also involved with womens missions. She worked in the kitchens of Columbia and Hanford High Schools for a number of years.
Hattie could always be found with her nose in a book, usually a Harlequin romance or self-help book. She also enjoyed sewing, spoiling her two dogs, trolling yard sales with her husband, extolling the health virtues of various nutrients, and doing water aerobics. She viewed the world with childlike innocence and never resorted to sarcasm or cynicism. The Bible was her compass for life. She knew it backwards and forwards, and didnt hesitate to quote from it when she felt the occasion demanded.
Hattie is survived by her siblings Don, Marilyn, Phil and Bob; daughter Bonnie and husband Mike of Carlsbad, California; son Paul and wife Judy of Richland; daughter Sue and husband Barry of Kennewick; daughter Ruthann and husband Cesar of Snoqualmie, Washington; son Doug and wife Andrea of Richland; son Tom and wife Terri of Walla Walla; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother Dave, sister Ginny, and two very young siblings.
Hattie is no doubt being lovingly welcomed on streets of gold by the gracious Lord to whom she was faithful to the last. The family especially appreciates Lisa Roberts and all the caregivers at OptiHomes where Hattie spent her last months.
The funeral is scheduled for Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 2 pm at Einans Funeral Home in Richland. Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions can be made to OptiHomes, Richland Assembly of God, or Central Church.

I wanted you to know that I am thinking of you and will also miss your mother/my friend, “Hattie.”
As you know, she and your Dad, “Mac,” were our neighbors for over forty years and if there is such a thing as *Perfect Neighbors,* they would have headed the list!
Sincerely,
Bev Jochen
