Janis B. Romrell

Janis Jan Bischoff Romrell was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, on November 2, 1932. She was the eldest child of Morris J. and Donna E. Bischoff. She grew up in Rose, Idaho, where her parents had a small farm and ran the country store. She attended school in the Rose area and graduated from Blackfoot High School in Blackfoot, Idaho.

She met her husband, Delwin Del Romrell while she was attending Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. They found they were perfect partners on the dance floor and were married on April 15, 1953, in the Idaho Falls Temple. They were sweethearts for the 52 years they spent together. They lived in the Blackfoot area until 1960 when they moved to Richland, Washington, where they spent the rest of their time together.

Jan was a kindergarten and first grade teacher for several years. She loved teaching little children. She enjoyed teaching music, Sunday School, and Primary in her church.

Music was a very important part of Jan’s life. She played the piano and was a church organist for many years. She frequently listened to the radio NPR and her CD’s. She sacrificed to make sure all of her daughters had piano lessons and learned to sing harmony. She also taught piano lessons for many years.

Jan was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many capacities including Stake Primary President and Relief Society President. She and her husband served a service mission in the Kennewick Employment Office of the LDS church, and were Temple workers for 12 years. She showed Christ-like love to all she met.

Jan would like best to be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. She loved spending her time serving the people she loved. She enjoyed traveling, silly jokes, clipping newspaper articles to send to her family, cooking, growing flowers, being patriotic, and making people happy. She peacefully passed away on May 22, 2005 surrounded by her family members after collapsing suddenly at home.

Jan is survived by her husband, Del; her sister, Dian Hughes of Richland; her daughters, Debra of Blackfoot, ID, Patti John Mason of Richland, Gina Ken Bricker of West Richland, Linda Larry Burbank of West Richland, Shelly Marty Schleiff of Bellevue, WA and Angela Jeremy Crystal of Corvallis, OR; 20 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Her parents, Morris and Donna Bischoff, and her brothers Brent Bischoff and Joe Bischoff preceded her in death.

The family will greet friends from 6:00 until 7:30 pm on Wednesday, May 25 at Einan’s Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 26 at 11:00 am in the LDS church at 1720 Thayer Dr. in Richland, WA. All friends are welcome.

  • Dear Romrell family,

Jan has been on my list of women I most admire, along with my mom, daughters, and only a very few others. Our oldest daughter, Kimberly, was good friends with Shelly during school years, and when Romrells’ daughters were grown and left home, Jan sometimes filled what I like to think of as a ‘grandmother role’ for our younger children. We always lived far from any family, and our children’s events were never attended by extended family. But Jan would send notes or come by, stop our children in halls, to encourage and congratulate them on any achievements. When your extended family is far away, that means a lot to kids and their parents!.

She taught two of our children to play the organ, and that gave them pleasure and skills used on missions, in church callings, and for entertainment and as accompanists.

Jan exemplfyies, as much as any person I have ever known, the lines from the hymn “Each Life That Touches Ours for Good”:

“What greater gift dost thou bestow, What greater goodness can we know

Than Christ-like friends, whose gentle ways Strengthen our faith, enrich our days.”

She is already much missed, and will always be much loved.

  • Del,

My condolences on the loss of your spouse.

When you again feel up to visiting with old friends, I can be available for a light lunch or whatever.

Incidently, is there any way in which I might get in contact with Jerry Duce? Email / snail-male or phone?

I have missed him almost as much as I miss my only son.

  • Some of my fondest and earliest recollections of Primary were when Janis lead the music. I can remember wanting to be a Primary Choirister just like her, when I grew up.

I always felt safe and valued when I was in her presence.

She had 100% committment to God and her family.

Our immediate family, Jerald and Shirely Duce, must ahave really admired their family because we bought the same turquoise station wagon, tent, and T.V. My mom and Janis even had their children in about the same birth-order.

The Duce family will always feel grateful to have known Janis and offer their family our deepest condolences.
