Helen Jo McBride Noland

Like so many mothers, Helen “Jo” McBride Noland 1919-2005 will be remembered for the years of love and joy she gave her family. Spending a summer day at “Grandma Jo’s” swimming pool was, for some, the best time they ever had. Ask anyone in the family or their dozens of friends, Grandma Jo’s was the place to be. Lots of laughter and too much fun.

Born in Boston, MA, March 26, 1919, Helen journeyed west at the end of World War II and eventually settled in Richland, WA, with her husband Robert Noland Sr. in the spring of 1947. She raised five children, spoiled ten grandkids, and adored her three great grandchildren before her passing on November 17, 2005.

She was active in her church, Christ the King, and a long standing member of the YLI. She loved playing bridge and was a member of several bridge clubs. Helen never found a crossword puzzle she couldn’t solve or a book she didn’t enjoy. Animals were always a part of her life, and her love for them was a model for all who knew her.

She loved music and found favorites in every genre and generation. Movies were a favorite escape until later in life when a trip to Maggie Moos or the mall was hard to beat.

Jo loved her friends and spoke highly of them all. She asked that all who survived her continue enjoying life to its fullest and take care of each other.

Most of all, Helen will be remembered for being a fantastic matriarch. She is survived by her children Bob and wife Karen Noland, Jim and wife Sheri Noland, Andrea and husband Pete Marsh, and Pat and wife Debbie Noland. As proud as she was of her children, Grandma Jo’s grandchildren – Kim Acker, Kelly Noland, Randy Noland, Kevin Noland, Tara Nysoe, Mark Evans, Michael Noland, Tyler Noland, Emily Noland, and Conner Noland -- stole her heart. Her three great grandchildren -- Zoe Noland, Jada and Jordan Acker -- fulfilled her legacy.

Helen’s passing is preceded by her husband, Robert, and loving son, Larry Noland.

A rosary will be held at Einan’s Funeral Home on Friday, November 25, at 7:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at the same location on Saturday, November 26 at 1:00 pm.

Helen’s family is grateful for the care provided by Richland Gardens. We are especially indebted to the remarkable staff at Kadlec Medical Center for their wonderful support.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Helen’s name is appreciated.

She walks in beauty once again. “Over the river,” you beautiful soul.

  • We will all always remember Grandma Jo forever. She touched everyone who knew her. My fondest memory of Grandma Jo was seeing her every hot summer day as she allowed us to swim in her pool. The door was always open. I will always remember creating the famous “Billy-Flop” at Grandma Jo’s pool. Her example of kindness has and will continue to shape how I treat others.

  • Dear Family of Jo Noland,

We remember our YLI sister fondly. I remember playing Bridge with her, when I was a young wife in the 1970s, at her home. She was a gracious hostess and sharp bridge player! Her obituary is a wonderful tribute. Her YLI sisters are remembering her in prayer, and all her family. God Bless All, and May God Hold Each of You Tightly, So Sorry For Your Loss,

    Love From,

    YLI Sisters of ‘Jo’

  • My deepest sympathies on the loss of your mother. I especially remember the picture of your mother and father seeing it at Aunt Mae’s on Archdale Rd. They were a handsome couple. The first picture of your mother looked exactly as I remember Mae before she went to Washington. Also I know Helen was so proud of her family–what a wonderful picture of the five of you.

My best to all of you at this difficult time.

    Love,

    Maureen

  • My deepest condolences are extended to the Noland family and to the many friends who like me were made to feel like family. Grandma Jo will be remembered by all who knew her as the free-spirited, social butterfly, who was always available for family, friends, lots of laughs, and giving sound advice when she felt it was necessary to be told.

She will be missed by all who knew her and her love and kindness will live in all of us forever.
