JOSEPH PATRICK FLEMING

JOSEPH PATRICK FLEMING, 79, of Richland, WA died at home with pneumonia complications on November 4, 2005 a little after midnight in the arms of his wife, ending a 9 ½ year struggle with Lewy Body Dementia with Parkinsonism.

Joe was born in Portland, Oregon on August 27, 1926, the youngest of six children of Dennis and Rose Mary Fleming. He attended Holy Redeemer Grammar School and Columbia Preparatory High School. In 1945 he received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, and later attended the University of Portland and the University of Oregon receiving BA and MA degrees. He then attended law school at the University of California Hastings in San Francisco. Joe had a long career in administration with Kaiser Engineers Oakland and Kaiser Engineers Hanford.

While attending the University of Oregon in August 1949, Joe met his life and love partner, EVA LOU COX, and they were married 50 days later. Eve and Joe celebrated their 56th anniversary on October 6, 2005. It has all been a glorious love and life adventure.

Joe had been transferred to Richland in 1985, and came to love the community. He was active in Kiwanis, Kaiser Management Club, Mid-Columbia Symphony, GESA Credit Union, and he and Eve were Directors of the Allied Arts Sidewalk Show for 11 years. He was also an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Richland.

Joe is survived by his wife, EVE, of Richland, his daughter, SHERYL D. FLEMING CONSORT and son-in-law JAMES J. CONSORT of Redding, CA, and a son DARRIN P. FLEMING, wife MARGARET, and grandson GREGORY P. of Eugene, Oregon.

There will be a Memorial Mass at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1126 Long Avenue, Richland, WA at 1:00 on Wednesday, November 9, 2005. Cremation has taken place and interment will be private at a later date.

Donations may be made to Lewy Body Dementia Assn, Inc., P. O. Box 11390, Tempe AZ 85284. A medical equipment loan center will be established in his name.

  • Joe, You inspired me far more than you probably knew. You were an example of what a true gentleman should be. You never raised your voice but quietly expressed yourself. You had a smile always at the ready. I miss you but know you are at peace in the lovely arms of our Lord. Thank you for treating me like a son.
