Lawrence Arthur Schienbein, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother; dedicated engineer, wind energy expert, educator, consultant, mentor, sailor, gardener, and photographer passed away on January 8, 2006 at the University of Washington Medical Center after a valiant fight to recover from a bone marrow transplant.
Lawrence was born to Walter and Gertrude Schienbein on June 19, 1946 in Edmonton, Alberta. After graduating from Ross Sheppard High School in 1964, he attended the University of Alberta where he earned his BSc in Engineering, MSc in Engineering, and PhD in Engineering. Lawrence went on to teach engineering in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Thunder Bay, Ontario, where they were blessed with the addition of their daughter Robin to their family. They moved back to Edmonton where Lawrence began his career in industry and son Brian came into their lives and completed their family. The family moved to Mississauga, Ontario when Lawrence was offered an opportunity to work in his specialty, Aeronautical Engineering. While there, he became an expert in Wind Energy, specifically Vertical Axis Wind Turbines. The family moved to California when Lawrence took a job with Flowind Energy. From there, they relocated to Tri-Cities where Lawrence worked for Pacific Northwest National Laboratories in the area of renewable energy until his death.
Lawrence enjoyed trips to the ocean, gardening, sailing his 27' Catalina, golfing, playing tennis, bike-riding, and taking long walks. He was also an amazing photographer.
Lawrence leaves behind Gwen, his wife, sweetheart, and best friend as well as his beloved children Robin of Topeka, KS and Brian of Richland, WA; his sweet granddaughter Tayler of Richland, WA; mother Gertrude Schienbein of Edmonton, Alberta; sister Doreen Betke and husband Carl of Edmonton, Alberta; brother Allan Schienbein of Edmonton, Alberta; Aunt Rosemarie Lienau of Spruce Grove, Alberta; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. Lawrence was preceded in death by his father Walter Schienbein.

Dear Gwen and Family,
All of you are in my heart and on my mind. May our Lord bless and keep you, and may He give safe travel to loved ones. Lawrence was such an accomplished, talented, and loving human being. You were husband and wife, best friends, lovers, soul mates; and God gave to you two beautiful children, and your sweet Tayler. I think that most people probably never find that special love you and Lawrence had. God bless you, Gwen. I hope that some time soon you can rest and take care of your little self. Our prayers for you and for your precious family will continue. “Blessed in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” Lawrence will always, always be with you in spirit. Love and hugs, Jim and Nancy
Gwen, Lawrence’s smile will be surely missed out at the Walla Walla Yacht Club. Our prayers and thoughts are with you. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.
In God’s glory and grace,
Lindsay & Gail
Our deepest sympathy. What a brave man he was, and Gwen, what a wonderful companian you were. You both fought this fight bravely. We will remember our good times we had at WWYC. We both admired him – and you – for your contributions, good humor, and knowing how Lawrence loved “Escape”. Please share our real sense of loss with your family. Love, Earl and Linda
Deepest sympathies to Lawrence’s family on your untimely loss. I will remember Lawrence personally for his sunny optimism no matter what the circumstance. Professionally, I most treasure his contributions as an instructor for engineering students at Washington State University Tri-Cities as well as at San Jose State University. Lawrence made a difference in the lives of many students!
Dearest Family,
Remember he is the sun in the morning and the moon at night. He’s the twinkle in your eye and the song in your hearts. He’s in his family and friends memories that keeps him oh so much still living! Love to you Robin and your family.
Dear family,
My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this difficult time. May you always have fond memories of your times together. Again, my deepest sympathies are you with you.

I am so sorry for your family’s loss. I know he was a kind and caring man, judging by the wonderful daughter he has raised. Best wishes.
People live in the memories of those they have touched, and Lawrence will live on with many of us for a long time to come. I want to believe he’s still smiling, as always. I feel lucky to have known him even if for a brief time. I’ll miss him.
