Valarie Rossetti
Born January 21, 1922 in Cortez, CO to Nora & Jake Kinsey. She passed away Sunday, March 26, 2006 in Kennewick, WA. Val, an irreplaceable inspiration, championed many causes, most notably the rights of women and minorities.
After attending business college in Oklahoma, she moved to Richland and worked at Hanford in the 1940s. In the 1950s, Val and her husband Ralph 'Rosie' moved to Aiken, South Carolina where she worked as a physical education teacher at St. Angela Academy and helped found the SC Women's Bowling Association. The couple returned to the Tri-Cities in the late 1960's.
Val taught PE and worked in the office at Christ the King school in Richland for many years. A local sports enthusiast and spirited bowler, Ms. Rossetti delighted in telling stories of being courted by the All American Readheads touring basketball team in the 1940's. It was during the dawn of womens liberation in the 1970's that she really began to shine, tirelessly rallying for the equal rights amendment while serving as local chapter president of N.O.W. and the League of Women Voters. Politically active, when election time rolled around Val would always be on site at a fair, in a school or church registering voters.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Ralph, in 1996 and two brothers and sisters. She is survived by son Michael Jackie of Draper, UT, daughter Cynthia Byers Robert of West Richland, and son Richard Holly of Seattle, WA, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at Einan's Funeral home, Richland, WA on March 30th at 7pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
I am grateful to have known Val. She was a strong woman who stood firm for what she believed in. I appreciated her passion. We could all learn from her steadfast nature.
My sincere sympathies to the family.
