Donell Lowell Jones
Donell Lowell Jones, 76, peacefully left us on Apri13, 2006 in Richland after a long illness. Donell was born to Lowell and Christina Lawson Jones on October 5, 1929 at their home six miles past Milton, Oregon. Donell grew up in the Milton-Freewater/Walla Walla area and graduated from Mac-Hi in 1948. While serving in the Army, he married Vera Barbuto of Walla Walla on May 5, 1951 in Port Townsend, WA. Donell and Vera came to the Tri-Cities in 1955 where they were both employed first by General Electric then several other Hanford contractors. Donell retired from Westinghouse in 1986.
During his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, water skiing, and helping his sons with their many and varied sporting activities. He particularly liked to fish with family and friends where he had the knack of always catching something even when others were not. Later in life, he enjoyed traveling, watching youth baseball, golf, bowling, and other activities with Vera, his wife of 51 years.
He was a member of Christ the King Church in Richland.
Donell was preceded in death by his wife Vera Barbuto Jones, his parents Lowell and Christina Lawson Jones, and two sisters Wegonda White and Judith Zaragoza.
Donell is survived by his sons Greg and wife Julie of West Richland, Mike and wife Liz of Walnut Creek, CA, and B.J. of Richland; and grandchildren Derek, Trevor, Allyson, Jill, and Emily.
Other survivors include: Brothers Larry Coralie of Clarkston, WA; Norman of Buckley, WA; Blaine Sara of Milton-Free water, OR; Mike Sue of Pendleton, OR; and Duane of Salem, OR; and Sister Mitzi Hess Floyd of Heppner, OR.
Graveside services were held on Friday, April 7, 2006 at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Father Thomas Champoux presiding.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Donell's name to: Hanford Flames Baseball, 4203 Laurel Drive, West Richland, WA 99353.
Wish I could have been there with you guys on the 7th to honor your dad. For a long time I am sure that he thought of me as his unplanned and sometimes unwanted 4th child. I remember fondly our wiffle ball games in the back yard, getting hit by sycamore balls, and going boating and watching everybody else ski : Next time you guys all get together you should drop me a note so I can come join you for a while and reminise and maybe play some wiffle ball.
What a great photo! I hadn’t seen your Dad in years, but remember his big welcoming smile! Fortunately, he passed the smile on to his sons!
