George William Mettler

George William Mettler, 72, passed away November 1, 2006 in Richland, Washington. He was born April 14, 1934 in a farm house in Miami County, Kansas. He lived in Richland Washington for the past 46 years and was an Engineer for Westinghouse.

George grew up on a farm in Kansas, where he loved to fish in the ponds near his home. He attended high school in Louisburg, Kansas where he was a football player and also played trumpet in the band. Shortly after high school he served in the Navy during the Korean War. After discharge from the Navy he attended Finley Engineering College, where he met his future wife LaRetha Rae Johnson. They were married in 1959.

In 1963 he and Retha opened their hearts and lives to adopt a baby son, David. Daughter Gayla joined the family in 1966.

They came to Richland for George to take a job with GE, and later Westinghouse. He was especially proud of his work on the FFTF project. Retirement finally came in 1994 from Fluor Daniels.

He took great joy in volunteering at his church community. He loved being active in the Christ’s Hands group at Central United Protestant Church.

Survivors include his wife LaRetha Mettler; son David Mettler wife Sheri; daughter Gayla Mettler-Adkins husband Harold; nephews Jim Jordan wife Debbie and Jerry Jordan wife Sondra; niece Joyce Wood husband Kevin; grandchildren Samantha, Danielle, Lane, Kevin, Josh, Aaron, Andrew, and Austyn Mettler. • Many knew him as Bill. I first knew him as George, since I was the scientist at GE that hired him to come to Richland to join the Laboratory. George and I worked together for years, decades is more like it. I designed the tests, and George got them built and got the data for me. He always joked that, “Don is the only scientist he knew that could draw a graph with one data point!” What I knew was, that with the zero point of that graph and even one data point that George obtained, I had valuable information that the experiment would be a success. Most would require confirming data points and we got them , but I knew George’s work was precise and accurate and could be trusted. George could be trusted with anything.

We also shared camping, fishing and going to CUP church, and I will always remember his smiling face and handshake. Many will miss him, I will miss him, and Retha, I share your loss as he was one of my best friends.

  • Bill/George, I knew him by both names. My Dad, Tom Keasling, would mention Bill in conversation while working at FFTF and I know he thought highly of Bill. Our family is reminded daily of both George and Retha for the beautiful stained-glass window of red roses that they created for the Keasling’s front-door entry. In the late 80’s I also had the privilege to work with George at FFTF as his secretary under Bob Martin. He was quite a memorable character, and I have enjoyed knowing you both all these years.

  • I had the privledge being a neighbor of Bill’s. I loved being his neighbor. I always considered Bill as one of the “good guys”. I had the good fortune of being one of Bill’s friends also. I loved looking across the street seeing Bill busy in his yard. I always knew if I ever needed any muscle that I could call Bill to come over to help me. He lived his faith. If the Lord had a job for Bill in this life or in heaven, I know he’s on it. He was an awesome gentleman that I will miss greatly. He will not be forgotten because he touched my life. Cheri

  • Dearest Retha and family. My deepest prayers are with you.

Bill was such a great man with a great sense of humor. We sure appreciated all the help he gave us at the winery. Not to mention a good laugh now and than. Please let me know if you need anything. God is taking care of him now and Bob and Bill are watching over us.

    God Bless.
