Grace Irwin Wood, 92, formerly of Asheville, died November 3, 2006, at Alterra Wynwood in Richland, WA.

She was born in Peterborough, Ontario on November 20, 1913 to the late George and Annie Irwin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederic M. Wood.

Mrs. Wood did her nursing training at the General and Marine Hospital in Owen Sound, Ontario, and then moved to the United States to work, first in Detroit, and later in California and Washington State. She joined the Army Nurses Corp during World War II, where she met her husband, who was stationed at the same Army hospital. She moved to Asheville with her family in 1962. She worked as a nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Oteen, NC until her retirement in 1978. She was a member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church and a volunteer for some years with ABCCM.

Mrs. Wood is survived by her son, Marcus I. Wood and his wife, Ruth, of Richland WA, her daughter, Susan D. Wood, of Lisbon, Portugal, and two grandsons, Nicholas F. Wood and his wife, Anne, of Chapel Hill, NC, and Alexander M. Wood, of San Bruno, CA. Also surviving are her sister, Annie Thomas, and niece, Ann Crowther, both of Peterborough, Ontario, and numerous grand-nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to the Asheville-Buncombe Community Christian Ministry ABCCM, 30 Cumberland Ave., Asheville, NC 28801.

A memorial service will be held in Asheville at a later date to be announced.
