Betty W. Howard
Betty W. Howard passed away on January 26, 2006 after a five-month long battle with E. coli 0157:H7. She contracted the E. Coli from eating spinach last September.
Betty was born on September 14, 1923 in Sharon Springs, Kansas. She graduated high school in Salina, Kansas in 1941. Like others of the G.I. Generation, during WWII she did her part by working in a gunpowder plant in Oklahoma. After the war, Betty moved to Yakima where she met and married John W. Howard on February 26, 1947. In 1948 they moved to Tri-Cities settling in Richland before it was incorporated as a city.
Betty worked at Hanford for over 30 years retiring from Westinghouse.
John and Betty raised four sons, Kim, Paul, Brian, and Darryl. Bettys hobbies were reading, sewing, tending to her raspberries, and spending time with her family and friends. Some of her best friends were a group from high school girls that wrote to each other with the latest news in a Round Robin letter since 1941.
John and Betty celebrated 46 years of marriage before he passed away on August 25, 1993.
Betty was active in politics, The March of Dimes, the Hanford Retirees Association and a variety of other ways of giving of herself. As a Daughter of the American Revolution, Betty always had a tender spot in her heart for all who had served their country.
Betty was preceded in death by her father and mother, James E. and Maude A. White, two sisters, Lois Ann Brady, Carole Copper White, husband John, and son Kim.
Betty is survived by sons, Paul, Brian, Darryl and his wife Sandy. She is also survived by grandchildren, Christopher, Rachell and their mother Barbara, Christian and his mother Deborah, Darryl and Sandys children, Ashley Howard, Jeff Shumate, Jennifer Dillard and her husband Chris, and great grandchild Javriel. Always in her heart were Rob and Krista.

I still remember the first day that I met Betty. She drove up to the ORP office in her big car and came inside to say “hello”. I was immediately struck by her cheerfulness, friendliness and by the fact that she immediately made me feel like I was almost part of the family, even though I was just an employee that worked for her son and daughter-in-law.
Years later she again made me us feel special as she followed the details as I met my future husband, our months of dating and our marriage. She was always asking how we were doing and assuring us of her prayers – at a time when we really needed them. We feel like we have lost a very treasured friend who always remembered us even though we haven’t seen her for years.
And to her family… please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time. Your mom, mother-in-law and grandma was a very special person and we know her loss hurts deeply.

Dear Paul,Christian and family.
I wish there were words to comfort you during this time. I just heard today of your mom/grammas passing. If there is anything I can do to help in anyway please let me know. I still live in the same house that my day care was in 20 years ago when I took care of Christian. Paul I remember your mom and her great smile and spirit. Her yellow car around town made me smile everytime I saw her. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all. God Bless… Just knock on my door and I will help in any way I can. If you just want to talk I’ll be here. Sincerely, Terri
Mark and I were so sorry to hear of your loss.
Thought I’d share with you the day your mother made my day. A very pregnant neighbor and friend, Kathy Prezbindowski, asked me if I could collect for her for the March of Dimes. Being a very quiet and shy 12 year old, I dreaded this opportunity but reluctantly knocked on every door around your entire block. When I came to your house, your mom welcomed me warmly and gave the most generous contribution. She also made me feel good about what I was doing. Having left Kathy’s house with a negative attitude, I returned with a positive attitude, thanks to her. Through the years I’ve thought of your mom’s generosity and kindness many times. Your mom will be fondly remembered.
To the entire Howard Family:
You are all in our prayers. Aunt Betty will be greatly missed. I spoke to the kiddos about her often. I am so very sorry for your loss. She will be remembered in our hearts always.
Love,
Debbie Fontenot, Nathan & Lacee Brady
I was so sad to hear of Bettys passing. Ive been living in NJ for almost 25 years but worked on the FFTF project at Hanford while she was secretary to Al Squire- probably around 1974. I was newly out of college and will always remember her kindness to me. I recognized her name right away when I heard it -even after all these years and distance, what a shame-she was a lovely lady. I am so sorry for your loss.
Sincere sympathy in the loss of your dear mom. We were former neighbors of yours on Cottonwood and our children played together while moms/dads had their coffee hour. Bob Johnson was the neighbor. Betty was a most friendly individual and we had many happy times just convering and laughing. Our sincere sympathy goes out to all the boys. God’s blessings!
Having just found out about Betty’s passing, my husband Brian and I, along with our daughters Christina Wade and Kim Palmer would like to wish the entire Howard family our deppest thoughts and condolences. Betty will truly be missed by all those who have had the honor of knowing her.

The Cook family would like to let Brian and his family know they are in our thoughts and prayers. I have no doubt that your mom was very proud of you all.
Darryl.
I’m very sorry to hear about the passing of your mother. Losing a parent is never easy, but our pain is soothed by the knowledge of a reunion in the future.
The words of Kahlil Gibran come to mind at a time like this: When you are sorrowful look in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.
I’m sure your mother was a delight to you and many others. I never had the opportunity to meet her, but in reading about her she certainly seems like a wonderful woman.
My heart goes out to you in your time of trial. May you find peace.
All the best,
Michael.
