Barbara Ann Linn

Barbara Ann Allen Linn, who was born in Sentinel Butte, North Dakota on September 4, 1923 to Webster and Rose Allen, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of February 3, 2007 at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, Washington.

Barbara was preceded in death by her mother Rose, father Webster, brothers Roman, Carl, Kenny, and Webb, her sisters-in-law Betty and Virginia, and her husband of 42 years Ira.

Barbara is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Patrick and Cindy Linn of Richland, Michael and Lila Linn of Arroyo Grande, California, Kevin and Sue Linn of Richland, daughter Sheila Zilar of Richland, and stepson Reuben and Young Hae Linn of Tacoma, Washington, brothers Henry Allen of Dickinson, North Dakota, Melvin Allen of Selah, Washington, and Donnie and Helen Allen of Tioga, North Dakota, sisters-in-law Margaret Allen of Beach, North Dakota, Priscilla Allen of Billings, Montana, and Nellie Allen of Miles City, Montana. She is also survived by grandchildren Steven, Douglas, Mark, Jennifer, Timothy, Lacy, Daniel, Alex, Christina, Jonathan, Griffin and Maya as well as six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mom lived a long and wonderful life and our prayer for her is that she will finally understand just how wonderful a life it was. She never accepted the fact that she was a great teacher, a great sister and a great mother. Like many of her contemporaries in the Greatest Generation, Mom endured hardships we could never imagine and did so with grace, determination, integrity, and an unshakable faith. Starting as a 13-year-old with the death of her mother, Mom helped raise six brothers, four children, a stepson and several generations of school children in a teaching career that spanned almost forty years.

Mom had a true work ethic grown on the farm and hardened by the Great Depression. She spent many hours each evening grading papers and developing lesson plans at the kitchen table in our home. On Saturdays that same table served as a platform where the best bread, cinnamon rolls, and pies in the history of man were formed, filling the air with a heavenly aroma that served as our incentive for being good at Mass on Sunday morning. It was a tradition born in North Dakota for her brothers and carried out west to Richland to her children and grandchildren.

Mom, we are so blessed for the time we had with you and we thank you for all you taught us and all you have given us. You will truly be missed we have hope that you are now at peace. We love you.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 7:00 PM Thursday, February 8, 2007 at Einan’s Funeral Home, Richland. Visitation will be Thursday 5:00-8:00 PM, also at Einan’s. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Friday, February 9th at Christ the King Catholic Church, Richland, with interment and concluding services at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

We ask that in lieu of flowers please make a contribution to the Washington/Alaska Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 530 Dexter Avenue North, Suite 300, Seattle, WA 98109 or to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, 1100 Fairview Avenue North, PO Box 19024, Seattle, WA 98109.

  • My Grandma was the best! Before my Grandpa died on my 2nd birthday, he would always read me a Dr. Suess book called ” You Can Only Be Old Once.” That was always my favorite book. After he died, Grandma took over. Almost every day when I was 2 or 3, Grandma would babysit me at her apartment while my mom would be busy playing the piano for rehersals and stuff. We would always play games like go fish and things like that. When I was in preschool in Spokane, Grandma would babysit me after Im was done. She would always in a chair in the dinig room until I got home from preschool. Then she would make me macoroni and cheese. That was my favorite snack. We would build puzzels until my mom came home. Since I was 2, Grandma has always been there for me. On the 26nd of January, I was pulled out of school early because Grandma was in the emergancy room in the Kadelac Hospital. From

January 26 through Febuary 2nd, I was at the hospital every day. On school days, I always walked across the street to the hospital to spend time and do my homework with her after school. On January 3rd, 2007, my brother woke me up and told me I was going to his apartment. In the car, I asked him how Grandma was and he said we would talk about it when we got there. At that moment, I new something bad had happened. When we got to his apartment, we sat down on the couch, and he told me that Grandma had passed away at 6:40 AM. At that moment, I burst into teers. Barbara was always my favorite Grandma. I miss her very much. I hope she has the greatest time of her life in heaven. I love you Grandma.

  • Mrs. Linn was my eighth grade homeroom teacher I also graduated with Kevin. Thirty years later I remember her warmth and encouragement. Not all teachers are memorable; she will not be forgotten. My deepest condolences and prayers for comfort to the family

  • I was so sorry to hear about Mrs. Linn. My mom sent me the newspaper. Mrs. Linn was one of the toughest teachers I had during my school career but I remember her with fondness. She had high expections while being kind. I have never forgotten that. Her expections and respect for her students is something that I incorporated into my own classroom. I had the pleasure of getting to know her on a more personal level when she became my sponsor during my confirmation at Christ the King in 1982.

Thank you Mrs. Linn for all the memories and what you taught me. It wasn’t just in a school setting but carried over into everyday life.

I am thinking of the Linn family. May you find peace in your sorrow.

  • Mrs. Linn was my 8th grade homeroom teacher in 1964/1965 and she was definitely one of my very favorite teachers. We kept in contact for years after with Christmas cards and she even gave me a place setting of my china for my wedding. She was an incredible teacher and I have always had nothing but warm memories of her. I offer my sincere condolences to the family and have you all in my prayers.

  • I count myself blessed to be among the many who must count Mrs. Linn among their best teachers. She encouraged and critiqued my writing in ways that have and continue to bear fruit. Eighth grade English, Carmichael, 77-78. Mrs. Linn did not compromise her high expectations and also had kind, compassionate words to a kid in a very difficult situation at that time of my life.

  • Barbara and Sheila Lynn will always hold a place in our hearts and minds for being the neatest, hardest working, nicest, persons we ever had the privilege to know and work with in out lives. Barbara was one of the greatest teachers who ever taught and her daughter Sheila a most outstanding student.

  • I would like to send my condolences to the Linn Family. Mrs. Linn always treated me like one of the family even though I drove her crazy! She always wanted to get me to eat and I would politely turn her down. I had some great times with Pat and Mike at the Linn house but I was always on my best behavior because Mrs. Linn ruled the roost!!! I hope everyone will remember her with that sly smile she had when I would try to pull a fast one on her. Bless you Mrs. Linn.

  • We bid you a fond farewell, Barbara. We will always be grateful to you for not only taking our daughter and granddaughter into your home, but into your heart.

Your generous hospitality was offered to us when we came to Richland. You were such a gracious hostess. The love you leave behind will help fill the absence felt by your loved ones. You deserve a “well done”.

  • Mrs. Linn was my 8th grade homeroom teacher. She was the nicest teacher I ever remember having. It’s great to see her smiling face again. I hope she will know someday the impact she has left on her student’s lives. My deepest sympathy goes out to her family. I know she is dearly missed!
