Lawrence ”Larry” C. Jacobs

01/05/1925 — 03/21/2007

From Richland, WA, US | Born in Tillamook, Oregon

Lawrence ”Larry” C. Jacobs

Surrounded by his family at home Lawrence C. Jacobs died on March 21, 2007 in Richland, WA. Larry, to his friends, was 82 years young when he died. He was born on January 5, 1925 to Bernhard and Rosetta Jacob, the youngest of 10 children, on a dairy farm in Tillamook, OR. Larry grew up on the farm and only left it after he joined the U.S. Marine Corp in April 1944.

After recruit training at Camp Pendleton, CA, Larry was assigned to the 1st Marine Division, 17th Company. On April 1st, 1945 Larry stormed the shores of Okinawa. In 1947 Staff Sergeant Jacobs returned to Tillamook where he met Lillian Vogt, a stunning brunette. Lillian and Larry were married in Tillamook on November 27, 1948. Shortly after their marriage the Marines called Larry back to active duty in February 1951 to serve his country during the Korean War.

After Korea Larry and his young family moved to Portland, OR where he began his work in the Heating and Air Conditioning business with his brother Basil. An opportunity to expand the company brought Larry to Richland in 1960. In the mid 60's Larry operated as Dean Jacobs Heating and merged the company into Jacobs and Rhodes Heating and Air Conditioning in 1970. Larry sold the business and retired in 1983.

In the intervening years Larry enjoyed many things but none more importantly than his 10 grandchildren. Each of the grandkids had that special bond with Grandpa Larry. They meant the world to him. Larry, as he loved his family, loved his Catholic faith. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and for many years active in the St. Vincent De Paul Society helping needy families in Richland.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Herman and Cyril, sisters Madeline, Dorothy, Irene, and Mary.

Surviving Larry is his wife Lillian, sons Ben and wife Chris Richland, WA; Bob and wife Mary Richland, WA; Scott and his wife Jody Vienna, VA; Rich and his wife Lisa South Bend, IN; his adopted son Steve Servin and wife Darlene Richland, WA and his 10 grandchildren Meghan, Robert, Theresa, Daniel, Brett, Madeline, Mollie, Catherine, Allison and Scott. Larry also is survived by his brother Basil and his wife Twila Portland, OR and sisters Frances Jacobs Portland, OR and Bernice Johns Tillamook, OR. Larry leaves behind numerous friends including many active and former Marines. Semper Fi.

A public viewing will be held at 6:00 pm followed by a Rosary at Christ the King Catholic Church, on Thursday March 29th, 2007 at 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, March 30th, 2007 at 2:00 pm at Christ the King Church, Richland, WA, with interment to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Richland.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Christ the King School Endowment Fund, 1122 Long Avenue, Richland, WA 99352 or Tri Cities Prep Catholic High School, 9612 St. Thomas Drive, Pasco, WA 99301.

  • It is hard to believe that such a vibrant soul has left us. I hope that like me, your family is comforted by knowing that Uncle Larry had a significant impact on our family, on his community and on the world through both his and his sons’ successes. I cannot help but smile as I imagine what a cheerful reception he must have received from his friends and family upon entering heaven.

  • Jake , Thank you so much for the wonderful memories I have of you and your family. I will always remember my Birthdays on the farm when you and Ben and Bobby would go hunting. You always brought me a HUGE Hershey chocolate bar. Even though we didn’t see much in the later years I will always remember you and your friendship you had with my dad. I will always know that I have 2 angels looking after me now. You will be missed. My Prayers are with all of the Jacobs. Love Cynthia

  • Oh, how the selfish person inside of me wants to be able to tell Jake this just one more time. I have always told my kids that you need to model your life after Jake Jacobs. Jake knew what was important in life, and he always showed it through his actions. Faith, Family, and Friends, were the three constants that he showed us everyday of his life through his actions. Jake knew the importance of these 3 things, and in his quiet, unassuming way, showed us the importance of each.

Jake, thank you for being one of my Dad’s best friends. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being my sponsor during RCIA. The jouney that we took together that year has changed my life. Thank you for all of the love and support for my children, and thank you for being the inspiration that we should all live by.

To all the Jacobs, thank you for letting me share your husband and Dad.

  • What a gem of a gentleman Larry Jacobs was. I’ll never forget meeting him twenty-five years ago when Scott first joined the Naval Criminal Investigative Service NIS in those daysand I was getting ready to depart for Manila. Larry gave me a small travel clock as a going away present even though we had just been introduced that day. I will treasure the gift and the memory of his thoughtfulness forever. Our depest condolance to Lil and the family with our expression of joy that Larry has gone to a far better place. Respectfully, Burke and Chong Hui McMurdo

  • Lillian, Ben, Bob, Rich and Scott,

I sorry I won’t be able to attend the service. Probably the second most influential male adult in my life was your husband/Dad. My 2 summers spent working at Jacobs and Rhodes taught me more practical information and skills than all 17 years of school. The value of hard work, the importance of attitude, the “get it done” approach, how mechanical things work were all taught to me by “Squirrely”. I recall one time I was applying adhesive to some return air ducting and daydreaming at the same time, which meant I was proceeding slooooowly. Larry nudged me and said “let’s speed it up Picasso”. His nephew Mike was working there at the time and got a good chuckle out of it. But in his caring way he let me know I needed to improve my performance and that there was a time for work and a time for play.

I also recall the salmon fishing trips to Ilwaco. Rising before dawn, breakfast at the local diner, sunshine, calm seas and limiting at least the first one. The second trip I only remeber rough seas, gray sky, feeding the fish and memorizing every detail of the toilet. Larry was always making sure everyone was maximizing his chances at getting a fish, worrying about himself last. What a great man. I consider myself privileged to have known him. He will live on in my memory because of the positive influence he had on me. I’ll miss him.

  • Lil & Family….

Obviously, Larry was the personification of the Marine Corps Motto “Semper Fidelis,”…always faithful to his country, family, and friends. He put his life on the line while serving with the First Marine Division during the Okinawa campaign and when recalled to serve in Korea. A true representative of “The Greatest Generation,” he was one of those rare individuals that you liked the moment you met him and a friendship blossomed from there. We can attest to that having had the privelege and pleasure to interact personally with him and correspond over the years. He possessed another rare quality. I never recall his ever having said anything bad about anybody. How many of us can make that claim? He will be missed by all who knew him. To those who never met him, that was their loss!

    Rest in peace Larry….
