Isabelle Helen Stewart Vaubel
Isabelle Helen Stewart Vaubel, a fair lady, lover of things fine, fragrant and frilly, passed away on Sunday, April 1st in Richland, WA with her family at her side. She was 92 years old. She lived in Richland for 3 1/2 years. Born in Chicago, Illinois on January 13, 1915 to Helen Mary Henry Stewart and John Alexander Stewart, Isabelle was the first to say she was a ''city girl!'' She had many family members who lived near each other as she was growing up, and the cousins remained friends over a lifetime. Her extended family played bridge, and that is where she learned the game she would love to play all her life. She attended the University of Illinois for one year, and then the fallout from the depression hit her family and she was unable to continue college. Issy went to work at her father's drugstore in Naperville, and that is where her future husband, Emerson, a student at North Central College there, first met her and proceeded to court her with flowers and poetry. They were married on October 2, 1936 and their enduring love and bond of 56 years was an inspiration to all their family and friends.
In 1944, with two young daughters in tow, the family moved to Pittsburgh, PA where Emerson had taken a job with American Bridge Co. as a tax accountant. They would add two more daughters to complete their family. It was during these year that Issy learned to sew beautiful dresses for her daughters, cook fabulous dinners for Sunday afternoon guests, one favorite being a standing rib roast with Yorkshire pudding and pecan rolls, and made their home a warm and comforting place to live. A chance to work outside the home as an interviewer for National Opinion Research Company came her away as the youngest daughter entered high school, and she enjoyed this new challenge. She was always proud to say that she worked on the study that was done before Medicare became a new program. A final move to Brunswick, Ohio with Emerson in the 1970's would find them making new friends, traveling overseas, and visiting their children and grandchildren.
Isabelle didn't meet a holiday she couldn't enjoy celebrating, especially birthdays and Valentine's Day! She spoiled her children and friends with wonderful surprise gifts, scrumptious cakes, and lots of cards! Her cheery outlook on life served her through all her years, and family occasions were a gift to all and always found her at her best. If you needed to talk to a friend at midnight, she was it. She was always just a phone call away. She was a wonderful Mother, and will be missed so very much.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Emerson, one daughter, Belle, and her brother, Jack. Isabelle is survived by her three daughters: Susan Kayser HC, Marianne Leedy Bill, and Louise Neighbours Bill; nine grandchildren: Dirk Kayser Mary, Heidi Peterson David, Kiersten Adams Todd, Brian TenEyck, Greg TenEyck,Ted Zemlick Carolyn, Laurence Zemlick Emily, Matthew Zemlick, and Zack Zemlick; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Thank you to all the staff at Alterra for your friendship, excellent care, and going the extra mile always; and to Hospice, for allowing the end of life to be filled with compassionate care.
A family memorial celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Donations in Isabelle's memory may be made to Kadlec Medical Center Foundation for The Garden, 888 Swift Blvd. Richland, WA. 99352 or to your local library.
Over the years we were graciously included in many family events that gave us the opportunity to get to know and enjoy Issy. Our interactions with Issy helped give us an understanding of why her daughters are such nice people.
Love, Judy and Bill
