Robert H. Ver Steeg

Robert H. Pappy Ver Steeg passed on to heaven on April 4, 2007. He was 91.

Rob was a long time resident of Richland, Having come to work as an electrician at Hanford after serving in the U.S. Navy during WW II, he stayed on as so many of us did. Rob was known for his love of ''HAM'' radio. He had been an extra class operator for 74 years W7AZ. His knowledge of outhouse lore and his lectures on the outhouse always left a smile on everyone's face. Rob loved to fish the Potholes Reservoir and spent many a happy hour perch fishing there. During his later years he became very active in the Richland Senior Association and served on the board to help with the opening of the new Richland Community Center. You could always find him at the dances, playing in the Happy Time Band in Prosser or attending many of the senior activities. Rob enjoyed taking pictures with his digital camera and making sure every one who wanted a copy received one.

Robert is survived by his son Robert Jr. his wife Alice Ver Steeg, his daughter Sheryl, her husband Ken Williams, three grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and his special friend Lois Mudd who could always put a sparkle in his eye, and by his long time friend Dr. Hal Ellner and his wife.

In lieu of flowers Robert would like donations to be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard. Care of Cook Erickson Post #7952: 1369 George Washington Way, Richland, WA 99354.

Celebration of Rob's life will be held at Einan's Funeral Home Chapel Monday April 9, 2007 at 2:00 P.M. with graveside services to follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

  • Bob Ver Steeg gave a renewed meaning to “one of a kind.”

The feeling one got in knowing him was a wish to be more like him. This is a standard to which few could aspire.

It was a God-given privilege to be in his company.

  • We want to express our deepest sympathies to the family. Bob was a really nice man and made my Grandma- Lois Mudd very happy for the last 5 years. I always admired the way he had a passion for continuing to learn new things and how active he was. I will always remember how he spent the day with us and my family at the hospital as we had our first baby. He meant a lot to my Grandma, and to our family and we will miss him very much.

  • Bob helped me with my General Class license in Ham Radio. I was crying and he got me calmed down during the testing and I passed. I also enjoyed his story about how he worked with Ronald Reagan when they were in commericial radio. When I worked at KONA, Bob brought me his collection of outhouse pictures. Judy West

  • It was my pleasure to have known Bob for many years , both on the job at Hanford and as an amateur radio operator. He will certainly be missed by those of us who knew him personally.
