Barney Virgil Lewis, Jr.
09/19/1923 — 08/04/2007
From Prosser, WA, US | Born in Benton City, Washington
Barney Virgil Lewis, Jr.
Barney V. Lewis, Jr, Sept. 19, 1923 to Aug. 4, 2007, was the oldest living native of Benton City. A Benton City Icon for over 83 years passed away peacefully during his short stay at Avalon Health and Rehab Center in Pasco.
Barney was a painter by trade but was best known for his horse and car selling/trading deals. Buying and selling horses was his passion; he also thoroughly enjoyed attending the horse races at Sundowns. Never missed a year always bet on the gray, hed say. He had another saying he loved to prove: dont ever look at what it is but what it could be.
He proudly served the United States Army during WWII 1943-1946. Even though those years were long ago, Barney still enjoyed reminiscing about his war buddies and the camaraderie they shared in the 498th Armored Field Artillery Battalion.
Barney was married to Maxine for 47 years before she passed away in 1993. Together they had four girls and one boy. The oldest, Judy, passed away in 1980 followed by his son Barney B. in 2002. Hes also preceded in death by his parents, sister Maxine Fennell in 2002 and grandson Chad Robinson in 1984.
He is survived by his daughters Linda Lloyd of Roy, Utah, Darlene and husband David Cartwright of West Richland, Gail and husband Geoff Robinson of Thompson Falls, MT, sister Bernice and husband Dallas Collins of Benton City and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Kincaid and the staff on the 4th floor of Kadlec for the care they provided him and especially the personal touches.
Graveside services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Benton City Thursday, August 9th at 11:00 AM.
Memorials may be made to the Benton City Junior Fair and Rodeo Association BCJFRA, PO Box 306, Benton City, WA 99320.
