Espenola Schempp Spanjer

We say goodbye to our loving Mother and devoted Grandmother as she begins her new journey in the arms of the Lord our father...Espenola Schempp Spanjer was born February 23, 1922, in Quincy Washington, where she grew up on a nearby wheat farm and graduated from Ephrata High School. She attended Sacred Heart Nursing School in Spokane Washington, and received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Washington. In addition to working as an office nurse for Doctor Kearns in Ephrata, and as a nurse in the Grant County Hospital, Espenola worked as a Public Health Nurse for the Grant County and Benton Franklin Health Departments until her retirement in 1984.

After her retirement, she spent countless hours selflessly devoting her time to helping others--through the Food Bank, WIC, and Central United Protestant Church. She loved working in her yard and was a certified Master Gardener. She was also an officer of the Retired Public Employees Association and was active in the American Legion, where she helped youngsters who were developing leadership skills.

Most of all Mom was a great Mother and Grandmother who devoted herself to her family; she was always there for us at any time and was forever full of love and support. She was a pillar of strength for her family no matter what our problems or needs were. We love you, Mom, and Grandma, and will forever hold you in our hearts and prayers...

She is survived by two of her brothers: Orville Schempp, Chelan, and Victor Schempp, Arlington; her sons: Frank Spanjer, Federal Way, Randall Spanjer, Richland, Richard Spanjer, Richland; her daughter: Dina Alberts, Everett; her daughters-in-law: Lona Spanjer and Ann Spanjer; her grandchildren: Jim Alberts, Jon Alberts, Karalyn Nguyen, Martha Dinsmore, Marc Spanjer, Mike Spanjer, Stephanie Avery, Randall Spanjer, Jr., Jacob Spanjer, Jennifer O'Callaghan, Zack Spanjer and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Martha Schempp, her brother Harold Schempp, and her sister Loretta Gardner.

Arrangements are being handled by Einan's Funeral Home in Richland. The memorial service will be Saturday at the Church of the Nazarene in Richland at 1:00 PM.

  • Espy was a noble lady who loved her family & had a family that loved her. She loved her God and rests with him now. I loved her, first as a mentor and later as a friend and later still as a special friend. I will miss her very much.
