Frederick Arthur ”Scotty” Scott

Fred, also known as Scotty, was born in 1925, in Albany, New York as the only child of Frederick and Eldora C. Smith Scott. He died peacefully with his family by his side, at his home on August 16, 2007.

Fred knew as a child that he wanted to be a chemist, conducting many chemistry experiments at his parents’ house. When it came time for college, he enrolled in Rensselaer Polytechnic College. This was interrupted when he was inducted into the Army toward the end of WWII. After boot camp, he was selected to be in the Army Specialized Training Program where he went through Signal Corps basic training and then ran a receiver station in Edmonds, WA as part of the Alaskan Communications System.

After the war, Scotty returned to school at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute where he completed his BS, MS and Ph.D. in Organic and Analytical Chemistry. During that time he met and married his wife of 56 years, Janet Wilson. In 1952, he chose a job as a research chemist for General Electric at Hanford and continued to work in the same capacity for Battelle and Westinghouse until his retirement in 1986. His enjoyment of chemistry never waned, and he described his work as getting to play every day. He was a fifty plus year member of the American Chemical Society, Sigma Xi, the American Nuclear Society, the Richland Rod and Gun Club, and Central Untied Protestant Church.

Scotty also enjoyed the wildness of early Washington, having grown up in inner city Albany. He was an avid outdoorsman and had many adventures fishing, hunting and backpacking with friends and family which will be fondly remembered. He hiked the Himalayas after his retirement and spent many hours working on his son's farm in Finley. Fred was a truly unique individual, having an analytical mind that provided thoughtful observations on any subject. His sense of humor and use of words could always make us smile. His many interests ranged from his garden, to rock hounding, to the nightly news. He was noted for his sweet tooth and derived great pleasure from a good, home made cookie or dessert. ''Pop-op'' was the greatest in the eyes of his grandchildren with whom he spent countless hours playing and as they grew older, fishing. He was a compassionate and caring husband, father and grandfather and will be missed more than words can say. Scotty is survived by his wife, Janet, his son Robert Scott, his daughter MaryBeth Janzen, son-in-law Michael and grandchildren Thomas and Ben Janzen.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, you honor Fred by contributing towards a memorial park bench for others who love the out of doors as he did, but need a respite as they age. Donations may be sent, in memory of Fred Scott, to the attention of Dave Bryant, Richland Community Center, 500 Amon Park Drive, Richland, WA 93654. Memorial services will be at 3 PM Saturday, September 1, 2007 at Central United Protestant Church Chapel, Stevens Drive, Richland.
