Harry G. Johnson
Harry G. Johnson, longtime Richland resident, passed away September 13, 2007 at Kadlec Medical Center, just 4 days shy of his 86th birthday.
Harry was born September 17, 1921 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He married Margaret Molly in June 1948. They moved to Richland in 1950 where he worked as a chemical engineer for various Hanford contractors before his retirement in 1984.
From his arrival in Richland he was an active member of Richland Lutheran Church, helping with church building expansions and coaching the “Lutes” basketball teams. He also coached the Red Yankee’s little league team for several years.
Harry was an avid golfer. One of his highlights was playing at Pebble Beach behind Joe DiMaggio in 1975. Throughout his career he was fortunate enough to get several holes in one. He also enjoyed family trips to Minnesota, the Oregon coast, and camping at La Wis Wis near White Pass with his kids and grandkids.
Harry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Molly; sons Thomas Johnson, Kennewick and Robert Johnson, Olympia; daughters Elaine Hunt, Longview, Jean Dana, Benton City, Ann Ullom, W. Richland, and Janet Hansen, Bellingham; 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and his sister Katherine Jahn of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at Einan’s Funeral Chapel in Richland.
Harry was one of the golfers with the “McGee Group” at Horn Rapids G.C. shortly before he felt he must give up the game. He was a good sportsman to the last and a fine playing partner. Although I didn’t know him at work at Hanford it was a pleasure to have known him after retirement. We will remember him fondly.
