Lena W. Schock

On September 15, Lena W. Schock, age 84, passed away in her home in Kennewick.

She was born at Greenway, South Dakota on July 6, 1923. Lena grew up on a family farm with her parents, Arthur and Esther Werre. She was the oldest of five siblings. She attended rural school and later graduated from the Eureka, South Dakota High School in 1941. Shortly after, she was enrolled in teacher’s college in Aberdeen, South Dakota, and later taught in a country school around the Eureka area. Next, she was employed at G.M.F. Insurance in Eureka.

On February 24, 1946, Lena Werre married Carl C. Schock at Zion Lutheran Church in Eureka, South Dakota. Lena and Carl were high school sweethearts. They were deeply in love when they were married and have remained that way for sixty-three years. Lena and Carl had one child, Mark, who is deceased.

After their marriage, Lena and Carl moved to Richland until they built their home in Kennewick. Then after 35 years working as a laboratory technician at Battelle Pacific Northwest, Hanford, Lena retired.

Lena’s retirement years were spent traveling with her best friend and husband, Carl, tending her beautiful home, garden and flowers, and cooking. And oh boy could she cook! She was a very giving person and loved and gave to all those around her. She was an active member of Richland Lutheran Church, where she was able to grow in her faith in God and make many special friends through the years.

Lena is survived by her husband, Carl C. Schock of Kennewick, Washington; her two sisters, Verna Wisehart of Kennewick, Washington and Gertrude Krein of Eureka, South Dakota; as well as by her two brothers, Alfred Werre of Aberdeen, South Dakota and Wilbert Werre of Bell Fourche, South Dakota. In addition, she is survived by lots of nieces and nephews who deeply loved and appreciated her. Her other brother, Edmund Werre, is deceased.

A memorial service will be held in her honor at Richland Lutheran Church, 901 Van Giesen, Richland, Washington at 2:00 PM Thursday, September 20, 2007.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Richland Lutheran Church in her honor.

  • I enjoyed visiting with Lena and Carl as I walked to my son’s house. Lena was a gracious lady and often gave me a sample of the dessert she was cooking. She will be missed.
