Dick Phillips, Jr.
On Wednesday, December 5th, 2007, heaven's angels took Dick home to be with Jesus. Francis Richard Dick Phillips was born October 13th, 1938, in South Boston, MA to Francis Richard Frank and Louise Phillips.
At a young age, Dick left Massachusetts to work on dairy farms in Maine, then traveled to Colorado and Texas where he worked on ranches. He purchased his own ranch in Wiley, TX. There he broke and trained horses, taught barrel racing and horsemanship. He also spent many years on the rodeo circuit where he rode broncs. Dick also loved racing dirt bikes for many years. '
Dick served in the US Army from 1962 to 1964, where he worked in the Army Security. After the Army, he went to work for Western Electric Co. in Dallas, TX. He was transferred to Arkansas, Kansas, Montana, California, North Bend, WA, and finally to Richland where he worked for GTE as a toll technician until he retired in 1993.
While in Richland, he met his wife Doris. They had 25 wonderful years together. Dick loved to fish and hunt. He bought Doris fishing gear and taught her how to catch steelhead and salmon. He also bought her a shotgun, and they hunted pheasant together with his favorite yellow lab, Rooster. Dick and Doris were members of Central United Protestant Church. They were also members of the Sunland Corvette Club for several years. When Dick retired, he sold the Vette...knowing his wife didn't want him running around town in his sports car. They also were members of the Rattlesnake Mountain Harley Davidson motorcycle club. Dick loved his 2001 Fat Boy.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, 18-month old brother, and special cousin Ken Hinkle. He leaves behind his wife Doris, stepdaughter Dawn Wolf and her husband Ryan Johnson of Idaho Falls ID, stepdaughter Kelly Holman and her husband Charlie of Forest, VA, step-grandson Eric Wolf of Richland, sister-in-law Bonnie Coulter and her husband Tom of Anthony, KS, sister-in-law Ruth Mosher and her husband Floyd of Topeka, KS, cousin Sue Hinkle of Richland, Aunt Jaunita Ryle of Richland, special friend Jennifer Connors and her children, and his dog Kayse. He also leaves behind cousins and many, many cherished friends.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 12 at 11:00 am at Central U.P. Church, 1124 Stevens Dr, Richland. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Tri-Cities Cancer Center or to Eagle Crest Rehab Center in Richland.
Doris and family I am so very sorry for your loss and was surprised at Dick’s death. Dick was one of the first people I met when I moved here in 1969 and later I worked with him for several years at the CO. He always was very kind and always had a good story to tell. I am glad he had such a good marriage and family these past years and I can only imagine how much you will miss him. My deepest sympathy….Betsey Davis

After knowing and liking him for 35 years or so, theres a lot to miss about Dick Phillips! The wryly grinning, gravelly voiced, always cheerful, sparkling conversationalist OK -Story Teller! Fellow fisherman, hunter, gun nut, car nut, motorcycle nut, and all-round good friend. Well miss them all!
Im thankful that his old roommate, Ron and I were able to visit with him in late October when he regaled us at length with the simple joy of getting on His Harley and just riding free.
RIDE FREE Dick!
Please know that everyone in my family are very sorry to hear that Dick has passed away. Both you Doris and Dick were very special people to our daughter RuthAnne Huston.
Also please know that you and your family are in our prayers during this very difficult time. God Bless you all.

We all remember Dick so well, he is unforgetable! We will miss his dry humor. And no more “railroad spikes” in his chest. Thanks Dick for making us laugh.
Bless you Doris.

Message: I remember Dick as a very kind man amongst many kind men that my father introduced me to in the early 70’s … another such man is Ron Lujan, once Dick’s roomate … a true friend to me and who later became my uncle.
The story that stands out in my mind is how Dick came by and later gave to me a Bowie knife, he said, was made from the leaf spring of a jeep and the ebony handle from the steering wheel of the same vehicle.
I don’t remember exactly how the knife came to be in Dick’s posession … I imagine it must have been the bounty of one of his many great life adventures, a few of which I consider myself fortunate to have heard tell.
I don’t recall when my posession of that knife slipped away, perhaps as result of one of my own adventures… I don’t know.
I do know that Dick was truly one of a kind, like that Bowie knife and my memories of same.
— Vaya con Dios!
