Dr. Francis Michael Jungfleisch

Francis Michael Jungfleisch passed quickly and quietly while at home on December 8, 2007. Francis was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on January 11th, 1940.

Francis was born to Lydia C. Ransil and Frank M. Yungfleisch and was part of a very large family with eleven brothers and sisters. Francis was known as “Butch” to his close family and friends. Under his father’s forgiving and ongoing love and tutelage, Francis learned and always upheld values such as integrity, hard work, honesty, spirituality and pure devotion toward his family. Francis was forever grateful and loving, and never let go of these values.

Francis attended Holy Family Catholic High School in Columbus, Ohio, and graduated Valedictorian. He went on to achieve a Masters degree in Chemistry from Ohio State University in Columbus. Francis then married his lifetime friend and love, Patricia S. Jungfleisch on September 22, 1963. Francis and Patricia traveled the country as Francis earned his rank to Captain as a navigator for the United States Air Force. They adopted their only two sons, Matthew and Kevin when Francis was stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington.

The family relocated back to Columbus, Ohio where Francis completed his PhD in Chemistry at Ohio State University. The family then lived in Wilmington, Delaware and St. Louis, Missouri while Francis worked in chemical instrumentation with the Dupont Corporation. The family relocated to Richland, Washington in 1977 where Francis and Patricia resided throughout the rest of their lives. While working as a Senior Scientist at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, Francis developed several chemical analysis patents that are still used by scientists to this day. His final position prior to retirement was president of the Chemchek Instruments Corporation where he enjoyed his many travels to Europe, the Middle East, and throughout North America.

Francis was instrumental in helping his wife, Patricia, achieve her baccalaureate degree in social work from the University of Washington and her MSW from Walla Walla College. He also spent much time and dedication to his wife’s community work in social work. Combined, their work combined made a lasting impression in helping to lead foster children toward eventual successful lives in the Tri-Cities community.

Throughout his life and into his retirement, Francis devoted his life and love to his wife and children and to their successful development. His immeasurable and incredible intellect drove his goals, values and a certain stubbornness in his approaches. Our planet would be a much better place if society held similar values overall. After Patricia’s death on April 30, 2005, Francis never felt as comfortable living on earth due to his unrelenting love, friendship and adoration towards her. Throughout the remainder of his life, he dedicated his time and energy to love and support his immediate family.

Francis is survived by his sons, Matthew and Kevin, their wives, Sherrie and Kelly, and by his granddaughter, Alison. Lord, accept this great and intellectual man to your kingdom, where he can live eternally with his wife and love, Patricia.

  • Over the years I have been working with one of Dr.Jungfleischs KPA analyzers which has greatly improved my life at work. The method we used prior to the KPA was highly difficult. Dr. Jungfleisch blessed my life. May Gods greatest blessings be with him and his loveded ones in this time of temoray parting.

  • I know Dr. Jungfleisch only through his work. As a Chemist overseeing the use of his Kinetic Phosphorescence Analyzer KPA at AREVA, I know first hand of Dr. Francis Jungfleisch’s ability to create, invent, and design a great instrument for uranium analysis. We at AREVA have used the KPA for over 16 years and truly appreciate his work. We will miss him, but will remember him from the invention he left behind.

I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your dad. He was such a vibrant and interesting man with great stories told. Although it’s been close to 25 years Yikes!! had to count back a little since I routinely saw him at your house on Davison, I’ll never forget him. Such a smart man-I never realized he had his Ph.D! I just wanted to let you know you’ll be in my thoughts. Fondly, Jen

  • My name is Lori Woods and I am one of the people that PJ and Francis have touched through “Foster Care and Adoption.” I am so sorry for your loss as it is a loss for all that knew your family. I adopted my 3 boys and it was due to your moms dedication and love of her job that got us through. Your dad was always there to support her in her many duties and always had a smile. I remember being so excited about something one day that I had to call PJ at home, but Francis said she was no longer there. I was devasted as I didn’t know so this is a memorial to both of them in there passing. My sons, Austin, Jonah and Easton are in a better place in life because of you both. They are flurishing in there every day lives and very active in a lot of things. PJ and Francis use to pick up my boys to take them to ice cream or go to the park. The boys loved those days as I’m sure you can relate. They were true to their heart. I remember one day when your dad came into my house and brought bags of Christmas presents for my boys. They were sooooooooo excited and your dad was just playing Santa like he did it every day. Of course, he had that big smile on his face. The day I called to talk to your mom and found out that she was gone, I could hear in your fathers voice how empty he was. I only hope to have a faithful and long lasting relationship as they did. I have been blessed to have had them in my life. Your mom was my rock and her rock was your dad. What a wonderful legacy you have in your family. Your mom often talked about her boys to me and she was so proud. I strive everyday to be the type of mom that she was. She loved the party that was put on for my boys at our church and talked for years about the waffle cones that we made for our big day. Thank you so much for shairng your mom and dad with the kids of this community. We were trully blessed to know them.

I miss you every day PJ and know that Francis has that big happy smile on his face, just being with you! Thanks for the memories!

  • Matt,

After losing my father shortly after starting at Hanford, I understand that there is now a hole in your life that will never be filled. It’s been over 6 years now and I still wish that I could call and talk with him on the phone, or go visit during the summer.

Your life will still move on, and many people will remember your father for all of his acheivements, but his greatest acheivement will always be raising a smart, caring, and friendly son for which you can always look back at and say that your father did that.

I am sorry for your loss.

  • My condolences for the family of Francis Jungfleisch. I knew Francis from his work both in the 200 West area at Hanford and also at ChemChek. He was a consummate professional and certainly one of the nicest people I have met professionally. His passing leaves a sadness knowing that such character and professionalism are hard to find today.
